Community Outreach Assistant (Part-Time)
About the Role
Under the guidance of the Community Outreach Manager (COM), the Community Outreach Assistant (COA) supports Operation Jump Start’s outreach, events, and volunteer engagement efforts. This position is well-suited for a college junior or senior, or an individual who has recently completed their undergraduate degree, and is interested in gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit work, community engagement, event planning, and communications.
The COA helps connect OJS with donors, volunteers, alumni, and community partners through events, outreach, and day-to-day support.
About Operation Jump Start
Operation Jump Start’s mission is to help low-resourced, high-potential, first-generation students get into, stay in, and graduate from four-year colleges. We do this through academic support, mentoring, and exposure to new opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
Development & Event Support (40%)
- Help plan and run donor, volunteer, and community events such as Scholars’ Day and Mentor celebrations
- Support the Community Outreach Manager with fundraising campaigns and event logistics
- Assist with outreach to potential sponsors and community partners
- Help confirm event details such as speakers, locations, schedules, transportation, and meals
- Create and send event invitations and communications using tools like Canva and Constant Contact
- Track RSVPs and assist with event follow-up
- Collect photos, quotes, and testimonials for marketing and social media
- Assist with donor communications such as newsletters, thank-you notes, and donation acknowledgments
- Help maintain alumni communications and engagement efforts
Volunteer Recruitment & Engagement (40%)
- Support volunteer and mentor recruitment efforts, including outreach, onboarding, and training
- Help promote volunteer opportunities through social media, online platforms, and community events
- Assist with planning and hosting an annual volunteer appreciation event
- Attend outreach events and fairs to help recruit mentors and volunteers
- Help create and update recruitment materials
- Support volunteer appreciation efforts (thank-you notes, recognition posts, newsletters, etc.)
- Use tools like Salesforce, Slack, Google Workspace, and Zoom to communicate with and track volunteers
Administrative & Office Support (20%)
- Assist with basic office opening tasks (checking voicemail, unlocking office, etc.)
- Provide general administrative support such as data entry, mailings, event staffing, and supply organization
- Support program events and activities as needed
- Proofread internal and external documents for clarity and accuracy
Preferred Qualifications
- Perfect for a college junior/senior or recent graduate
- Interest in nonprofit work, community engagement, education, or social impact
- Comfortable using technology and learning new systems such as Salesforce, Constant Contact, and Canva
- Experience helping with events, student organizations, or community activities
- Bilingual in English/Khmer or English/Spanish is a plus, but not required
Schedule & Position Details
- Compensation: $21.00/HR
- Total hours: 25–30 hours per week (on-site)
- Office hours: Monday–Thursday, 9:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m.; Friday, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
- Work schedules can be adjusted to accommodate college class schedules, as long as hours fall within regular business hours
- Occasional evening or weekend events are required
- This is a part-time, temporary, at-will position with a 90-day review to assess performance and organizational needs, with the possibility of transitioning into a permanent role
