Nonprofit
Associate Director of Development
Details
Description
New Media Ventures (NMV) and New Rising Ventures (NRV) exist to shift structures of power by changing where capital is invested. We find, fund, and support the startups, tech, and media projects building political and social power. From Vote.org to ActBlue Civics, we’ve backed 150+ organizations that continue to define the progressive movement.
The Culture
NMV and NRV are a pro-Black mix of Millennials and Gen-Z employees. We believe in a liberated workforce and strive to cultivate a low-ego, high-performance culture and a flexible work environment that centers joy and impact. We are looking for a self-motivated colleague who is diligent about their work, takes risks, thinks outside of the box, and is bold in their love for culture and community – basically, someone who wants to do dope stuff with dope people.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an Associate Director of Development to own our revenue engines. Reporting to the Co-Presidents, you will aggressively grow our funder pipeline, restructure our development operations for maximum efficiency, and turn connections into capital. The Director will also play a key role in shaping our external communications strategy, ensuring our voice, positioning, and thought leadership are working as hard as our fundraising. You’ll directly manage one part-time Fundraising Associate and serve as the connective tissue between programmatic work and funder-facing storytelling. A successful candidate will have strong project management instinct, growing exposure to philanthropy and a background in political, media, and/or nonprofit giving.
The Work
- Run the Fundraising Program: Project Manage the full fundraising calendar — sprints, deadlines, deliverables, and keep team accountable to the numbers and timeline.
- Cultivate & Close: Identify, cultivate, and help close major donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors. Maintain a healthy portfolio.
- Manage the Pipeline: Lead revenue forecasting, track funder activity, and surface where leadership and board need to engage.
- Manage Associate: Directly manage and develop one part-time Fundraising Associate; set priorities, coach on craft, and build a tight ops cadence.
- Own Fundraising Operations: Run CRM (Salesforce) with clean data segmentation and tracking. Build repeatable processes for proposals, reports, renewals, and prospect research.
- Own Funder Communications: Draft and manage proposals, reports, pitches, and stewardship touchpoints. Develop a cohesive funder-facing voice that reflects our programmatic work.
- Coach the Closers: Equip leadership and board members with materials, talking points, and prep so they can be effective fundraisers in their networks.
- Execute Events: Project manage funder events and partnerships from concept through follow-up.
What You Bring
- Deep mission alignment with NMV as well as deep familiarity with progressive politics and/or social justice movements
- 4+ years total experience in fundraising; at least 2 of those years of experience must be in large-dollar fundraising, e.g. stewardship, major gifts, political or movement campaigns, and/or institutional giving
- Strong project management skills: you can run a calendar, hit deadlines, juggle parallel workstreams, and translate strategy into a tight operating plan
- People management experience or readiness: you’ve managed (or are ready to manage) at least one direct report and can coach, prioritize, and delegate
- You understand the difference between c3 and c4 work and can navigate impact investing and venture philanthropy models with ease.
- You have cultural competency with a track record of working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to see the big picture and think strategically while also executing discrete tasks
- Skill at managing upwards and motivating team members to excel
- You’re a natural connector who is excited about event planning and building a movement-aligned donor base.
- Strong written communication skills and an instinct for how to translate programmatic work into compelling funder-facing narratives
- Proficiency in Salesforce and automation tools. You are familiar with data segmentation and clean tracking.
