Description
VECINA is hiring a part-time contract Mentoring Attorney to support attorneys, legal service providers, and trained volunteers working with immigrant families.
This is a frontline legal mentoring, training, and technical assistance role. Approximately 70% of the position will focus on VECINA’s Family Integrity Project, which supports immigrant and mixed status families working to prevent family separation or reunify after immigration enforcement. The remaining 30% will support other VECINA legal programs, including defensive asylum, Afghan newcomer mentoring, and Switchboard.
The Mentoring Attorney will help pro bono attorneys, legal service providers, and volunteers navigate increasingly complex family reunification processes, including ORR procedures, sponsor documentation, identity verification, fingerprinting, DNA testing, home studies, family preparedness, and related policy changes.
This is not primarily a direct representation position. The role focuses on legal mentoring, practical guidance, training, and technical assistance for pro bono and partner networks. VECINA’s work is fully remote.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing legal mentoring and technical assistance to pro bono attorneys, legal service providers, and trained volunteers
- Reviewing family reunification materials, sponsor documentation, and related case information within VECINA’s scope of support
- Developing and delivering trainings on ORR processes, sponsor documentation, family preparedness, sponsor risk assessment, and policy changes
- Monitoring ORR policy, litigation, field guidance, and emerging practices and translating developments into practical guidance
- Supporting family preparedness and risk mitigation work for families facing possible separation
- Contributing to webinars, written practice resources, online course content, volunteer guidance, and public facing materials
Required qualifications include:
- JD from an accredited U.S. law school and active bar license in good standing
- At least 2 years of immigration law experience, preferably including work with unaccompanied children, ORR reunification, family based immigration, asylum, or removal defense
- Strong legal writing, research, issue spotting, and communication skills
- Experience providing legal mentorship, technical assistance, supervision, or support to attorneys, volunteers, or community partners
- Comfort working independently in a fast moving remote environment
- Deep commitment to immigrant rights, family unity, and VECINA’s mission
Bilingual English/Spanish skills, Texas residency, ORR reunification experience, and experience designing or delivering legal trainings are preferred but not required.
This is a part-time independent contractor position at $60/hour for approximately 20 to 30 hours per week. The role is fully remote within the United States, with Central Time availability required.
