    Description

    About Counsel for Justice

Counsel for Justice (CFJ) is a nonprofit legal services organization providing free civil legal assistance to LA County residents with a focus on survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, veterans, and tenants facing eviction. CFJ delivers legal services through a mix of staff-run programs and volunteer attorney clinics, working closely with community partners and the court. Our work is grounded in ensuring access to justice, collaboration, and respect for the people we serve.

    Position Overview

As part of CFJ's Domestic Violence Project, the Family Justice Center (FJC) Paralegal helps survivors of domestic violence navigate the legal system and seek restraining orders and other legal protections. The position involves providing compassionate, trauma-informed assistance while working closely with domestic violence service providers, LAPD, and other community partners as part of a multidisciplinary team. Through this collaboration, the Paralegal helps connect survivors with legal information, assistance, and additional supportive services and resources.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Coordinate with FJC partners to receive and assess referrals for restraining order assistance, including conducting intake, screening, and triage, and connecting individuals with appropriate legal and community-based services.
    • Provide accurate, trauma-informed legal information and assist self-represented litigants with court forms, declarations, court procedures, and available resources.
    • Support program reporting, resource maintenance, trainings, meetings, and other administrative needs.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned, consistent with the role.

    Qualifications

    • Qualified candidates must have one of the following:
    1. Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program; or
    2. B.A. or B.S. degree with 1 year experience working in a law office or other legal setting under the supervision of a licensed California attorney with a letter certifying the experience.
    • Bilingual fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish is required
    • Prior experience working with survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault, or in a courthouse or legal services setting (preferred).
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to use business communication platforms, and web-based case management platforms.

    Work Environment, Compensation, and Benefits

    • This is a regular, full-time, nonexempt position with a 36.25 hour workweek. Compensation is $25-$35 per hour, commensurate with experience.
    • This is an in-person position, requiring regular clinic coverage at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Downtown Los Angeles.
    • Role reports to the Directing Attorney of the Domestic Violence Project.
    • CFJ offers a competitive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) with employer contribution; generous paid time off and paid holidays.
    • This position requires prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and working at a computer, as well as frequent communication with litigants, staff, volunteers, and community members in a busy courthouse environment. The employee may occasionally be required to lift and move office materials and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.

Counsel for Justice is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages applications from candidates who reflect the communities we serve. Reasonable accommodations will be provided to qualified individuals with disabilities throughout the application and hiring process and during employment, in accordance with applicable law.
