We seek to nurture conversations that connect our values with everyday life; we value the practice of prayer to gather people in worship; and we seek to integrate intellectual growth with a generous, compassionate, and joyful spirit.

    The ideal candidate:

    • Is passionate about working with upper school students to encourage their spiritual exploration and creative growth.
    • Is willing to walk alongside our students, faculty, staff and families with insight, warmth, and good humor.
    • Works with sensitivity and effectiveness with students, families, colleagues of diverse backgrounds and identities, demonstrating a commitment to equity and inclusion through partnership with colleagues and students.
    • Exhibits knowledge within religious traditions and the broader field of humanities.
    • Displays strong classroom management skills and uses a variety of approaches to deliver instruction and encourage student mastery..
    • Enjoys being an active member of the school community that extends beyond the classroom.
    • Has a Masters-level degree in theology or a Master of Divinity.
    • Is ordained in the Episcopal Church.
    • Has at least three years’ experience working in an Episcopal school as a school chaplain or in a similar ministry setting.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Serving as the primary chaplain for the Upper School (US) division (grades 9-12) with oversight of worship and pastoral care.
    • Working collaboratively with the other chaplains to plan and lead all-school worship services in the Cathedral and with the student Vestry to support their leadership of US chapel services.
    • Teaching 2 sections in the Religious Studies Department of the US division.
    • Collaborating within the Religious Studies Department to coordinate scope and sequence across grades 4-12.
    • Serving as an academic advisor and advocating for students in this capacity.
    • Communicating with colleagues, students and parents on a regular and professional basis.

Faculty are on campus from 7:45 am to approximately 4:00 pm. Additional responsibilities include participating in department, division and faculty meetings, holding regular office hours, as well as attending chapel, cathedral services, and assemblies. Faculty participate in the life of the school by supervising a study hall, sponsoring a student club, or leading an extracurricular program.

    Salary and Benefits:

The full time salary for this position is $65,000-$140,000. The exact salary is determined based on education and teaching experience using a step scale. Benefits available include medical, dental, life insurance, a retirement plan with a school contribution, free parking or transit benefits, and lunch without charge, as well as support for professional development experiences. Additional stipends are available for coaching middle or upper school sports.

The National Cathedral School is grounded in the Episcopal promise to honor the dignity of every human being. We believe a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community fosters intellectual excellence and empathy needed to amplify the collective power of young women to enrich and improve a dynamic world. We therefore seek candidates who will embrace diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to ensure a strongly connected and engaged community in and outside of the classroom.
