    Description

    Job Purpose

    We are seeking a hard-working, self-motivated, and team-oriented shop hand to join our growing team. The Library Production Assistant is responsible for the assembly and finishing of the manufactured products in the Freedom Reads shop including but not limited to the modular bookcases that form the Freedom Library. This position works closely with and supports other members of the Library Division across designated tasks related to the fabrication, packing, and shipping of Freedom Reads’ manufactured inventory. The Library Production Assistant reports to the Library Production Shop Manager.

    Essential Functions

    • Assist in the preparation of materials for assembly and finishing projects.
    • Clean and maintain tools, machinery, and work areas to ensure a safe and organized workspace.
    • Follow safety protocols and guidelines while operating machinery and handling materials.
    • Help in the assembly and disassembly of wooden components.
    • Perform basic carpentry tasks under supervision, such as measuring, cutting, and sanding.
    • Support Library Production Manager with various tasks as needed.
    • Assist with onsite Freedom Library openings by driving trucks, moving and delivering furniture, and affixing furniture setup inside prisons
    • Assist in the setup and operation of woodworking machinery, including saws, drills, sanders, and routers.
    • Apply proper techniques for handling and joining different types of wood.
    • Complete tasks as assigned and report any issues or concerns to supervisors.
    • Utilize the shop work tracking and quality control system in collaboration with the Library Production Manager..
    • Adhere to shop policies and procedures to ensure quality work and safety standards are met.
    • Collaborate with team members to complete projects efficiently and effectively.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience

    Any combination of professional experience, volunteer work, coursework, and other transferable skills may be applied toward these qualifications.

    • High school diploma or GED or equivalent
    • General knowledge of standard power tools and hand tools
    • Experience working within safety guidelines (OSHA/ANSI)
    • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice and experience working with diverse communities.
    • Understanding of and/or experience working in systems associated with incarceration and the mass incarceration industrial complex desired.
    • Because this position involves some driving of rental trucks—this individual must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s License and have no restrictions on driving leased or rented vehicles.

    Skills/Abilities

    • Basic knowledge of carpentry tools and equipment.
    • Adaptability and willingness to learn new skills and techniques.
    • Ability to use and maintain hand tools (saws, hammers, chisels, etc.) and power tools (drills, sanders, routers, etc.).
    • Familiarity with safety procedures and protocols when operating machinery.
    • Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy and quality control of finished products.
    • Effective communication skills to follow instructions and collaborate with team members.
    • Dependability and reliability to complete tasks efficiently and on time.
    • Problem-solving skills to troubleshoot minor issues in equipment or projects.
    • Time management skills to prioritize tasks and manage workload effectively.
    • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to all safety regulations.

    • Physical strength and stamina to lift and move heavy materials and equipment—never more than 50 lbs without a team-lift.
    • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precise woodworking tasks.
    • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.

    • Work is performed primarily in an indoor manufacturing environment.
    • Noise from operating machinery and equipment, requiring hearing protection.
    • Use of safety gear like glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots is required onsite when in production.
    • Presence of dust, debris, or fumes depending on the manufacturing processes.
    • Regular presence in person at our offices is required
    • 30% of this work will involve travel
