About Us
Freedom Reads is a first-of-its-kind organization working to transform access to literature in
prison. In supporting the efforts of people in prison to transform their lives through daily
engagement with books, Freedom Reads affirms the right of all of us to robust participation in
the imaginative and intellectual life of American society. The organization’s flagship initiative is the Freedom Library: a large-scale collaboration with the leaders of state Departments of
Corrections to create micro- libraries in prison housing units in every state in this country and
Puerto Rico.
