    Director of Operations

    Reports to: Executive Director

    Status: Full-Time

    Location: Hybrid | Boston, MA

    Position Summary

    The Director of Operations & Business Analysis is a senior role focused on strengthening organizational effectiveness through data-informed decision-making, process improvement, and strong people and operational systems. This position partners closely with the Executive Director, leadership team, and staff to analyze financial and organizational needs, translate strategy into actionable insights, and ensure the organization operates efficiently, compliantly, and in alignment with its mission and financial goals.

    Key Responsibilities

    Human Resources & People Operations

    • Lead HR functions including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and staff development.
    • Foster a positive, inclusive, and values-driven organizational culture that supports employee engagement, collaboration, and well-being.
    • Serve as primary point of contact for HR-related matters and maintain records in compliance with employment laws.
    • Oversee payroll and benefits administration in collaboration with an external vendor.
    • Work collaboratively with all members of the team to support a cohesive and mission-aligned workplace for both onsite and fully remote employees.
    • Oversee assignments for volunteers and interns in collaboration with department heads.

    Operations & Internal Systems

    • Oversee day-to-day operations and support process improvement and change management initiatives.
    • Develop, maintain, and support adherence to organizational policies and procedures.
    • Oversee or directly supervise team members responsible for events, facilities, technology, systems, and vendor relationships.
    • Provide operational and analytical support for budgeting, internal controls, and audit coordination in collaboration with the Executive Director and finance team.

    Business Analysis & Organizational Effectiveness

    • Analyze organizational and financial processes, workflows, and systems to identify opportunities for improved efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability.
    • In partnership with an external CFO and accounting consultants, develop, maintain, and interpret financial and operational dashboards, reports, and key performance indicators, including budget-to-actuals, trend analysis, and variance reporting, to support leadership decision-making.
    • Partner with department leaders to clarify business and financial requirements, assess resource needs, and support cross-departmental initiatives with clear financial implications.
    • Support strategic and annual planning by translating organizational priorities into measurable goals, financial assumptions, budgets, and operational plans.
    • Conduct scenario modeling and impact analysis to assess the financial and operational implications of organizational changes, new initiatives, or shifts in funding.
    • Support implementation of new processes, tools, or ways of working that strengthen financial discipline, transparency, and accountability

    Reporting, Communication & Governance Support

    • Develop clear internal reports and summaries to communicate insights, trends, and recommendations to leadership and the Board of Directors.
    • Support internal communications to ensure clarity, transparency, and alignment across staff and leadership.
    • Engage respectfully and professionally with Board members, staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders.

    Compliance & Risk Management

    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit, employment, and regulatory requirements.
    • Oversee organizational insurance policies and renewals.
    • Support risk management and incident reporting processes.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in business administration, public administration, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred.
    • 7+ years of experience in business analysis, operations, HR, or organizational leadership within a nonprofit or comparable environment.
    • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, financial reports, and operational metrics.
    • Experience developing financial reports, dashboards, or performance indicators to support decision-making.
    • Demonstrated experience supervising and mentoring staff.
    • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
    • Experience with HRIS, CRM, or other enterprise systems preferred.
