Position Summary

CLARO seeks a Part-Time Transportation Organizer to support the implementation of CLARO’s Promotoras for Transportation Justice initiative. Alongside the Organizing Director and a team of promotoras, the Transportation Justice Organizer will ensure the voices of Latino, immigrant, low-income, transit-dependent, and historically underserved residents are centered throughout the project. The Organizer will facilitate community conversations, help develop and lead trainings, support survey implementation, coordinate and lead focus groups, town halls, and neighborhood-based outreach. The Organizer will bring a relationship centered approach to the recruitment, training, and development of leaders who will advance transportation justice for transit-dependent communities.

This role is ideal for someone who is equity focused and has strong community relationships, facilitation skills, and a commitment to transportation justice, environmental justice, language access, and community-led planning.

Key Responsibilities

• Relationship Building. Conduct 5 to 10 one-on-one relational meetings weekly with stakeholders and other community leaders.
• Leadership Training. Run leadership development and training programs on narrative-building, strategy, and public action.
• Campaign Execution. Support issue campaigns focused on transportation justice.
• Administrative & Data Tracking. Maintain detailed databases of leaders, manage action calendars, and submit regular progress reports.
• Community Facilitation. Facilitate community meetings, focus groups, listening sessions, and promotora trainings focused on transportation barriers, transit access, affordability, pedestrian safety, family travel needs, language access, and connections between transportation, health, jobs, school, childcare, and daily life.
• Promotora Support. Support promotoras during outreach, survey collection, community events, and training sessions, including helping with project materials, outreach scripts, field troubleshooting, and documentation.
• Outreach & Survey Collection. Participate in neighborhood-based outreach to gather input from residents, workers, families, transit riders, youth, seniors, childcare providers, and other community members.
• Focus Groups & Listening Sessions. Plan, recruit for, and facilitate focus groups and listening sessions, including sign-in, interpretation support, note-taking, discussion prompts, participant engagement, and documentation of key themes.
• Community Meetings & Town Halls. Support logistics and facilitation for public-facing community meetings and town halls, including welcoming participants, setup and breakdown, interpretation support, small group discussions, written comments, and feedback summaries.
• Transportation Justice Content Support. Help residents connect lived experiences to broader transportation justice issues, including transit frequency, reliability, safety, affordability, disability access, language access, environmental health, neighborhood infrastructure, and access to jobs, education, healthcare, and cultural life.
• Documentation. Document community input through notes, forms, attendance sheets, survey tracking, photos where appropriate, and short summaries of outreach activities.

Desired Qualifications

Strong candidates will have 1-3 years experience in community organizing, facilitation, outreach, public health, transportation advocacy, environmental justice, youth work, tenant advocacy, immigrant services, or neighborhood-based programs. CLARO especially values candidates with lived experience in the communities served by the project.

Required Skills

• Professional or grassroots community organizing experience
• Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills
• Comfort speaking with residents in community settings
• Ability to support group discussions and listening sessions
• Experience with outreach, canvassing, tabling, or community engagement
• Commitment to Latino, immigrant, low-income, and transit-dependent communities
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
• Reliable communication and follow-through
• Ability to document outreach activities clearly
• Bilingual English/Spanish ability strongly preferred

Preferred Experience

• Experience as a promotora, community health worker, outreach ambassador, peer educator, organizer, or facilitator
• Familiarity with San Francisco neighborhoods, especially the Mission, Bayview, Visitacion Valley, Excelsior, Tenderloin, or other transit-dependent communities
• Experience discussing public transit, pedestrian safety, environmental justice, public health, or neighborhood safety
• Experience facilitating bilingual or multilingual community meetings
• Experience working with families, youth, seniors, workers, or limited-English-speaking residents

Schedule

This is a part-time position with a flexible schedule based on project needs. Evening and weekend availability will be important for community meetings, town halls, outreach events, and promotora trainings. Estimated hours may vary depending on grant phase, but could include regular weekly meetings, outreach shifts, training sessions, and community events.

Work Environment

This role will be field-based and community-facing. Work may take place at neighborhood events, transit stops, community centers, schools, small businesses, public meetings, outdoor outreach locations, and CLARO partner sites. Administrative work may be completed remotely or in a hybrid setting, depending on project needs.
