AVMS Executive Director Position Overview
Allston Village Main Streets (AVMS) seeks a dynamic, energetic, hands-on leader with professional experience to provide strategic leadership and day-to-day management of a neighborhood-based community and economic development non-profit organization.
The ideal candidate needs excellent communication, relationship-building, administrative and leadership skills. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to work independently, multitask and manage multiple programs.
The Executive Director will report directly to the Board of Directors and facilitate Board activities, committee goals and initiatives, and community relations. They will provide support, resources, and information to businesses, residents, neighborhood associations and work with key stakeholders and municipal agencies to help grow and maintain the vitality of both the organization and Allston Village.
About Allston Village Main Streets
Founded in 1996, Allston Village Main Streets is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works to help make Allston Village a thriving, safe, friendly business district through beautification, business assistance, and promoting the health, cultural and artistic vitality of the neighborhood. Our team consists of one full-time Executive Director, a part-time Program Manager, an active 11-member Board of Directors and dozens of dedicated community volunteers helping plan and produce our distinct programming.
AVMS provides technical assistance to new and existing businesses, implements maintenance and design improvement programs, hosts promotional events that draw people into Allston, and advocates on behalf of the neighborhood through one-on-one and group advocacy efforts. Allston is a young, artistic, diverse food and entertainment centered commercial corridor, and the work we do helps to maintain it as a vibrant destination.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership and Strategic Management
Be the face of the organization in public and donor communications. Manage day-to day operations of the organization. Ensure reliability, clarity, and accountability. Work with the Board of Directors to implement the strategic vision, ongoing programming, and oversee contractors and vendors. Ensure organization is submitting necessary documentation to City, State, and Federal agencies.
Financial Management, Grant Writing, and Partnership Building
Manage, along with the Treasurer, the annual fiscal budget to ensure organization funds are spent in accordance with AVMS and City of Boston policy. Seek ways to supplement our existing revenue streams and seek grant funding sources to enhance our existing programs and expand organizational capacity.
Collaboration with City of Boston
Collaborate with Boston Main Streets to ensure compliance with the annual contract and work plan, as well as various City of Boston departments to assist local businesses and neighbors with licenses, permits, and approvals. Obtain necessary city permitting for ongoing and yearly events and programs.
Event and Program Development
Work with AVMS staff and committee volunteers to plan and execute annual events including Taste of Allston, Allston Village Awards, Rat City Arts Festival and more.
Grow and develop existing street beautification programs and bring new ideas to life through development and management.
Local Business and Community Support
Establish direct relationships with local business owners and workers, build trust in the community, assist local businesses with issues, ideas, and emergencies through direct assistance or connection to relevant city or state departments, and advocate on behalf of the organization and the local community.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of operational leadership, ideally in nonprofits, BIDs, or municipal departments, with a demonstrated track record managing budgets, finances, and operational activities.
- High level of cultural competency and experience working in diverse and multicultural settings. - Experience in resource development, fundraising, event planning and program development and execution.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and coordinate a volunteer-run organization - Experience with current software such as MS Office, Salesforce, social media, design software, Constant Contact and QuickBooks preferred. - Familiarity with the Allston neighborhood is preferred but not required.
Salary
$70 - $75k plus performance incentives with room to grow over time
