Scholarship Fund of Alexandria - Director of College Advising

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria (SFA) is a non-profit organization based at Alexandria City High School (ACHS), working in close partnership with Alexandria City Public Schools. The SFA is dedicated to expanding college access and success for ACHS students, particularly those with financial need or facing other barriers to higher education. It provides advising, resources, and scholarship support to help students navigate the college application and financial aid process. The SFA Team collaborates with school staff, families, and community partners to strengthen pathways to postsecondary education. This position offers an opportunity to work in a small, dynamic, collegial and mission-driven organization that is focused on making a long-term impact on students’ lives.

The Director of College Advising is a full-time, on-site role, responsible for leading and delivering comprehensive college advising services for high school students. This role manages the planning and implementation of college awareness activities, individual and group advising sessions, and workshops on college applications, essays, financial aid, and scholarships. The Director of College Advising oversees all program management aspects of the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria’s college advising program, serving students across the four campuses of Alexandria City High School. In collaboration with the SFA’s scholarship program, the Director of College Advising provides persistence support to currently enrolled college students who are SFA award recipients.

Qualifications Required:

• Demonstrated experience in college advising, counseling, or student support services, preferably in a high school or community-based setting;
• Strong knowledge of college admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and postsecondary pathways, including for first-generation and low-income students;
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to build trust with students, families, school staff, and community partners;
• Proven organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple activities, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate records;
• Leadership experience, including supervising staff or volunteers, coordinating programs, and contributing to strategic planning or program development;
• Enthusiasm to contribute to team efforts that benefit the overall organization as needed;
• Commitment to college access, attainment and success, culturally responsive advising, and supporting students and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences;
• Proficiency with common office and student information tools (e.g., Google Workspace or Microsoft Office, online application platforms, data tracking systems);
• Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, or a related field; advanced degree or relevant certifications are beneficial;
• Ability to work on-site at Alexandria City High School, maintain appropriate professional boundaries, and comply with school and district policies.
