    Description

    We are seeking a creative and technically skilled Communications Manager to lead communications with the general public, especially our English language social media strategy across multiple channels in North America. This is a new position.

    Overall Mission

    We are seeking a creative and technically skilled Communications Manager to lead communications with the general public, especially our English language social media strategy across multiple channels in North America. This is a new position.

    Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

    • In consultation with the Executive Director, RSF global strategic guidelines, create and execute a multi-channel social media strategy for the English-speaking Americas that translates RSF’s advocacy, actions, campaigns, positions, and point of view into content that inspires, engages, and mobilizes the public
    • This role will start by taking ownership of RSF USA’s Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts with the possibility of adding additional channels in the future (X, Youtube, TikTok…)
    • Video Production: Script, film, and edit a variety of video content, such as short-form videos, long-form interviews, clip compilations, etc.
    • Graphic Design: Create assets such as infographics, social tiles, and digital reports to illustrate press freedom issues visually
    • Curate content for social media accounts, including working with Paris-based social media team to identify global content produced by the Paris-based social media team that will be relevant for North American audiences and vice versa
    • Create rapid response social media content based on breaking news and developments in the field
    • Develop concepts for recurring features across social media channels
    • Monitor trends and influencers on social media to gauge appropriate type of reaction/time to post, trending topics, news stories, new accounts to follow, strategic follows to gain more followers, collaborations, etc.
    • Monitor social media for evidence of press freedom violations
    • Reply to messages on social media accounts
    • Assist in the production of English versions of international content in collaboration with the Paris-based comms team
    • Ensure the RSF voice and brand continuity throughout all content
    • Develop content that mobilizes the public to take action (sign petitions, email lawmakers, donate, etc.)
    • Actively engage with followers, journalists, and partner organizations to grow RSF’s digital footprint and authority in North America.
    • Provide monthly reports on key metrics (reach, engagement, conversion) and iterate content based on what resonates with our audience.
    • Ensure the security of all digital assets, databases and systems and respect for all applicable intellectual property laws
    • Manage strategic partnerships with external organizations, including paid advertising and securing pro bono ad placements in print, digital, and broadcast media
    • Work with consultants and external partners to manage brand building and communications campaigns
    • Support other departments with graphic design for content such as fundraising communications, policy briefings, reports, etc.

    Qualifications

    • At least 5 years of professional experience in digital media, social media management, or content creation, preferably within a nonprofit, newsroom, campaign, or advocacy environment.
    • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop) and social management tools.
    • A deep understanding of the news cycle and the ability to simplify complex legal/political issues into engaging content.
    • An intuitive understanding of best practices for maximizing engagement, earning followers, and increasing visibility across major social media sites.
    • Exceptional copywriting skills with the ability to adapt tone for different platforms.
    • Native-level fluency in English. French or Spanish proficiency is a plus, but not required.
    • A proactive and creative thinker willing to bring new ideas to the table and go beyond their immediate job description as necessary
    • Comfort working in an international organization and interacting with people from different countries and cultures
    • Eligible to work in the United States.
    • Willing to commute to the Washington, DC office at least twice per week–we have a hybrid in-person/remote model
    • A passionate commitment to the First Amendment, press freedom, journalism, human rights, and the safety of journalists.

    Level of Language Proficiency
