    Description

    The New York Studio School is an independent, nonprofit art school located in Greenwich Village. Founded in 1964 by artists for artists, the School provides a range of studio-centered academic programs, including a two-year MFA degree, a three-year Certificate Program and Virtual Certificate Program, intensive two-week Marathons, and a variety of Evening and Weekend classes. These programs attract both emerging and established artists seeking to deepen their practice through sustained studio work.

    Committed to the primacy of studio practice, the School continues to uphold its founding principles while embracing new ideas, collaborations, and public initiatives that expand the role of art in contemporary culture. Beyond its academic offerings, the School presents a vibrant public program of lectures, exhibitions, and special events that foster dialogue among artists, students, scholars, and the broader community.

    The New York Studio School is currently seeking a part-time Sculpture Studio Technician.

    Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    STUDIOS, SHARED SPACES & SCULPTURE DEPARTMENT

    • Maintain optimal working conditions in the sculpture studios for classes and independent projects.
    • Support sculpture faculty with class projects and enhance the student studio experience.
    • Orient students in the safe and effective use of basic tools and materials.
    • Support faculty projects by demonstrating and instructing processes for classes and providing guidance to students on their independent projects.
    • Maintain, order, and organize tools, equipment, and materials for the sculpture studios.
    • Uphold strict policies for dust control and the safe use of tools and equipment, including providing training and monitoring studio work environments.
    • Orient and instruct students in safe, community-minded studio practices, material usage, building policies, and general safety and security procedures.
    • Oversee and train class monitors and tuition remission students.
    • Conduct regular inspections of the studios, machinery, and tools, and coordinate necessary repairs.
    • Manage storage areas and ensure all shared spaces remain organized and accessible.
    • Read and interpret safety manuals, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS), and equipment operating and maintenance procedures.

    QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

    • Understanding of and experience with basic sculptural processes, including woodworking, steel fabrication, and clay, is preferred. Experience with clay can be acquired through on the job training.
    • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and problem-solving skills when working with faculty and students using both traditional and experimental materials and techniques.
    • Strong organizational skills, patience, versatility, and a solution-oriented mindset.
    • Diplomacy, thoughtful interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
    • Experience working respectfully with students and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
    • Sculpture-making experience is helpful but not required.
    • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and occasional late nights, as operational needs require. Additional hours may be required during periods of studio reconfiguration, exhibition installation, and other major setup and breakdown activities.
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform frequent bending, lifting, walking, and climbing of stairs. Must be able to safely use ladders.
    • NYC Fire Department Certificates of Fitness F-93 (Fire Guard) and G-95 (Flammable Gases/Cutting & Welding), or the ability to obtain these certifications upon employment.

    PROCESSES WITH MATERIALS

    • Woodworking/Carpentry: Experience using power tools, including table saws.
    • Casting: Knowledge of various casting techniques and the ability to teach students the fundamentals of plaster mold making, or the willingness and ability to learn these skills on the job.
    • Steel Fabrication: Knowledge of and experience using MIG and stick welding equipment, as well as a plasma cutter.
    • Clay: Knowledge of clay recycling using a pug mill, management of clay work before and after firing, and loading, unloading, and firing electric kilns, or the willingness and ability to learn these skills on the job.
