Job Announcement: Finance Associate
The Legal Action Center (LAC) seeks a full-time Finance Associate. This position will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer. The primary function of the job involves preparing vouchers and billings/invoices for payment. The Finance Associate will ensure that vouchers, billings, time/leave, and any other records are maintained in compliance with funder, auditor, agency, and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with a proven track record of accuracy, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering exceptional accounting work while meeting deadlines.
The position is based in New York City. LAC has instituted a hybrid work model that offers the opportunity to work remotely, some of the time. COVID-19 vaccination and booster are preferred.

LAC is a private, not-for-profit law and policy organization with offices in New York City and Washington, DC. LAC is the only organization in the country whose sole mission is to fight discrimination against people with criminal records, drug or alcohol histories, and/or HIV/AIDS. LAC is a national leader in fighting mass incarceration by expanding alternatives to incarceration, seeking to connect individuals in the criminal legal system to health care services, and reducing barriers to reentry into employment, housing, and higher education. LAC uses legal and policy strategies to fight discrimination, build health equity, and restore opportunities for people with criminal records, substance use disorders, and HIV or AIDS. LAC uses a multi-faceted approach to effectuate its mission and create systemic change through impact litigation, legal services, education, and policy advocacy. For over fifty (50) years, LAC has fought to dismantle systemic barriers that perpetuate racial disparities in health, justice, and opportunities. LAC’s litigation and legal services program has established cutting-edge legal precedents and provided legal services. These services help tens of thousands of individuals with arrest and conviction records, substance use disorders, or HIV/AIDS overcome discrimination and privacy violations in various walks of life, including employment, housing, education, and health care. Job Responsibilities:
- Reconcile all agencies’ bank accounts, including the investment accounts and journal entries for bank reconciliation.
- Prepare vouchers and billings to funders accurately.
- Grants’ analysis and spenddowns.
- Record accounts receivable invoices and input them into the accounting system.
- Record cash receipts and electronic receipts from clients, funders, and various government funders.
- Manage monthly closing of A/R accounts.
- Assist with Cash Flow analysis.
- Support audit preparation work as it relates to accounts receivable and grant receivable.
- Assist with audit schedules and supporting documents for the accounts receivable and grants receivable.
- Reconcile monthly and quarterly accounting reports with development reports.
- Manage time reporting, ensure time sheets are done on a timely basis, and monitor all payroll/timekeeping activities.
- Prepare time tracking worksheets with the payroll data and grants’ full-time equivalent percentages.
- Prepare Bi-monthly reporting of lobbying activities.
- Ensure compliance with all state registrations.
- Renewal of insurance coverages and compliance with all grant registration requirements.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Job Qualifications and Requirements:
- College graduate, Associate’s degree or higher in finance or accounting.
- Minimum of three years of experience in non-profit accounting or finance.
- Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite; emphasis on Excel is essential.
- Excellent computer skills and knowledge of fund accounting software, particularly FUND EZ 14
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proactive and self-driven with a proven track record of working independently and effectively leading one’s job responsibilities.
- Well-developed emotional intelligence and proven track record of effective collaboration within a team and across the entire organization.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with experience: The salary range is $70,000 to $75,000 per year; Excellent benefits, including medical insurance, 403(b) plan with employer contribution, and flexible pre-tax benefits.
