Promotora(o)s Associate
UnLocal is a community-centered non-profit organization that provides direct immigration legal representation and community education to immigrant communities in New York City.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Promotora(o) Associate will play a critical role in supporting immigrants who face heightened vulnerability due to their immigration legal status. This individual will help extend UnLocal's reach into the community by building trusted relationships with families in Northwest Queens.
This role supports a Promotores Community Safety Model that complements UnLocal's ongoing Know Your Rights (KYR) presentations, Emergency Family Preparedness Planning support, risk assessment, and information on involvement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). Unlike group-based KYR workshops, this model emphasizes trusted, peer-led, one-on-one outreach in real-world community settings, enabling more personalized support, referrals for legal assistance, and deeper community trust-building.
This is a part-time, contract-based position requiring 20 hours per week for an initial one-year term, with the possibility of an extension dependent on grant funding. The position reports directly to the Senior Manager of Outreach & Community Education.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide oversight, training, and coordination of promotora(o)s throughout the grant period of one year, with the possibility of an extension.
- Support immigrant families with accessing and completing New York State Guardianship applications
- Conduct sustained, relationship-based outreach to immigrant families in target communities, identifying and engaging households in need of guardianship and family preparedness support
- Serve as a trusted liaison between community members and legal support, ensuring families understand their options and next steps in their immigration pathways
- Coordinate closely with the Senior Manager of Outreach & Community Education to align outreach strategy with program goals and grant requirements
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of outreach activities, community interactions, and referrals to support grant reporting and program evaluation.
- Collect community feedback to identify emerging needs, service gaps, and opportunities to improve the program.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Proficiency in a second language, particularly Spanish and/or French, to effectively communicate with diverse client populations
- Demonstrated experience leading campaigns or advocacy initiatives
- Strong commitment to social justice and immigrant rights
- Experience in community organizing, grassroots advocacy, or a related field (paid or volunteer)
- Familiarity with Train-the-Trainer models, Guardianship and Family Preparedness frameworks, and Know Your Rights methodology
- Flexible onsite schedule, with availability to work evenings and weekends as needed
SALARY:
- $20 an hour
- 10 days of Sick Leave
- Commuter Benefits
