Position Summary:
The Maidu Summit Consortium (MSC) is seeking a dedicated Business Manager to provide leadership and day-to-day management of the MSC Business Office, including Grants Management. The Business Manager will work closely with the Executive Director to advance programmatic, fiscal, and organizational goals.
REQUIRED DUTIES
Financial & Administrative Leadership & Oversight
- Provide fiscal leadership aligned with MSC’s mission, values, and strategic priorities
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Business Office to assure MSC’s financial health and stability
- Manage accounts payable and receivable, grant-related items, insurance, payroll
- Assure adequate control and accounting of all funds
- Manage organizational budgets, financial planning, and reporting in collaboration with the Executive Director
- Provide regular financial reports to the Executive Director
- Evaluate financial performance by reviewing financial statements and cash flow
- Collaborate with relevant staff or BOD committees to manage investments and support fundraising initiatives
- Ensure administrative systems are efficient and effective
- Manage bookkeeper contract and responsibilities
- Fulfill all state and federal registrations and reporting duties, including registration with CA Attorney General, state and federal taxes, file property taxes and exemptions
- Provide financial projections or other reports as needed to support with land acquisitions
Grant & Contract Administration
- Ensure the effective management of all grants and contracts
- Research, identify, develop and submit grant proposals to secure funding for organizational priorities
- Ensure compliance with grant guidelines and requirements
- Develop and maintain relationships with MSC funders
- Develop and maintain an understanding of MSC programs, projects, and initiatives to effectively communicate their impact and outcomes
- Collect and analyze data to support grant applications and reporting requirements
- Monitor and track grant spending, ensuring compliance with grant terms and conditions
- Prepare and submit regular progress reports to Board of Directors, and grantors
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of grant applications, reports, etc.
Human Resources
- Oversee Human Resources functions, including staff recruitment, development, hiring, terminations, and compliance
- Maintain personnel files
- Oversee Contractors and maintenance of appropriate records
- Implement and maintain HR policies, programs, and practices
- Ensure compliance with applicable employment laws and regulations
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum three years experience in Business/Financial Management and Administration
- Demonstrated proficiency with creative problem solving
- Organized, practical, efficient, self-directed and flexible
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Willingness and desire to participate in organizational activities
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Maidu culture and Peoples
- Aligns with, understands and can communicate the mission and vision of MSC
- Proven ability to identify and secure grants, manage budgets, develop strategic partnerships and fundraise
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain a professional demeanor in all interactions
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed to represent and advance MSC’s mission, including attending conferences, meetings, and networking events
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and partnerships on a local, state, and national level to meet goals and expectations
- Proficiency or aptitude to learn: Microsoft Office, Green Light, Google Suite, Adobe, QBO, and other programs as needed
- Demonstrated ability to work within the cultural and governance framework of a tribally led non-profit
- Bachelor’s degree in Non-Profit Management, Indigenous Studies, Business Administration, or a related field preferred
WORK SCHEDULE & EXPECTATIONS
The Business Manager is expected to maintain a regular schedule of office hours to ensure accessibility and organizational oversight. The Business Manager is expected to work onsite at the Chester Office, with some flexibility for remote work. Due to seasonal weather patterns, particularly in winter, access to the office may occasionally be affected, and flexibility may be required. Travel to local, regional, national or international events is required from time to time. The expectation is for the Business Manager to balance remote work with in-office presence to support organizational needs and effective leadership.
EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT
The Business Manager position is governed by an at-will employment agreement, which serves as a formal, written document outlining the terms and conditions of employment. This position is classified as exempt from overtime and timecard tracking, reflecting its management and professional nature. The employment relationship is at-will, meaning that either MSC or the employee may terminate the employment at any time, with or without cause or notice, in accordance with applicable laws. The employment agreement details responsibilities, compensation, benefits, performance expectations, and other relevant terms of employment. A background check must be passed before accepting the position. A valid driver’s license is required. A negative drug test is required. All new hires are subject to a 90-day review period. This position reports to the Executive Director.
