    Description

    New Yorkers United for Child Care seeks a talented, motivated, and dedicated organizer and strategist to join our team as the Director of Campaigns and and Organizing.This leadership position will report to the Executive Director, and will both supervise the organizing staff and play a lead role in setting direction and providing oversight for all of NYUC’s campaigns.

    This is a chance to play a central role in a historic fight to win universal child care in New York State. You’ll work alongside powerful parent leaders, help shape statewide political outcomes, and be part of a movement that believes people power wins change.

    Responsibilities

    Campaigns Development & Strategy:

    • Leads the development of local and statewide organizing efforts including visioning, planning, and strategy development
    • Leads the development of a base building strategy to increase our base in New York City and State, including overseeing the implementation of paid and volunteer canvassing effort
    • Lead a team of staff and organizational partners to effectively implement campaign plans to win legislative and policy victories by setting and consistently achieving yearly, quarterly, and weekly goals as well as responding to campaign flow, stakeholders' and internal priorities to adapt plans effectively.
    • Work with the Executive Director and Communications Director to coordinate and manage public education, advocacy tactics, and action/event coordination.

    Staff Supervision & Development:

    • Supervises campaign staff via weekly supervision meetings, quarterly plans, and performance management, and provides mentorship to support relationship building, skill development, and campaign creativity.
    • Collaborates with the Executive Director and leads the team to maintain and advance an organizational culture that supports work/life balance, fosters positive staff relations, and ensures that staff members receive the evaluation, training, support, supervision, and leadership development that they need to succeed.

    Coalition-Building:

    • Strengthens and grows our coalitions, in New York City and State through broad-based institutional and individual relationship-building and maintenance.
    • Serves as NYUC’s ambassador with other institutions, the press, and the general public; proactively positions NYUC and advances its reputation in the fields in which it works.
    • Ensures coordination and cultivation of key institutional and political relationships across NYUC’s team
    • Models the ability to deal with conflicts calmly, constructively, effectively, and in a timely manner.

    Qualifications:

    • Director of Organizing and Campaigns should be accountable and accessible, a proven leader on campaigns, a good listener, politically savvy, and personally well organized
    • A commitment to social, class, economic, gender, and racial justice
    • Understands NYUC’s mission and model for building power with parents and would-be parents
    • Minimum 7 years of professional organizing experience working in a community organization and/or labor union.
    • Minimum 3 years of effective leadership development, supervision, and management skills.
    • Strong coalition building and facilitation skills across a diverse set of organizations and constituents.
    • Experience and understanding of policy development and advocacy.
    • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
    • Knowledge of the various New York State communities and its political landscape.
    • Ability to independently manage multiple projects from conception to completion, supervise staff, and work as part of a team.
    • Leadership skills to keep NYUC’s various programs coordinated under a unified vision.
    • Excellent personal organization and time management skills; capacity to manage multiple priorities; and accountability to goals.
