Through our Food Pantry, Thrift Store, and Donation Center, we offer free food and clothing with no restrictions on geography or background — always with a focus on preserving dignity and serving the whole person.
Position Summary:
The Volunteer Manager coordinates all aspects of the volunteer program in union with the practices of the Catholic Church. This role requires a highly organized self-starter who thrives on interpersonal connection and proactively seeks to understand the needs of our volunteer community. You will ensure all activities are carried out with professionalism, compassion, and efficiency, maintaining a positive environment while delivering on our community-focused mission.
Key Responsibilities:
Volunteer Operations & Management
- Full-Cycle Recruitment: Recruit and advertise for new volunteers; manage applications, background checks, and onboarding.
- Logistics & Training: Manage scheduling systems and lead volunteer training on House of Mercy’s mission, values, and safety protocols.
- Internship Oversight: Manage the end-to-end intern program, including interviewing, onboarding, and supervision.
- Recognition: Lead ongoing and annual volunteer appreciation efforts to foster a culture of gratitude.
Communication & On-Site Engagement
- Relationship Building: Act as the primary point of contact and maintain a consistent on-site presence to build relationships and keep a pulse on volunteer morale.
- Conflict Resolution: Proactively resolve conflicts and ensure a welcoming, respectful environment for all.
- Materials & Brand: Collaborate with the marketing department to ensure volunteer materials and website content remain current and engaging.
Internal Collaboration & Leadership
- Departmental Liaison: Work closely with Directors and Managers to assess staffing needs and ensure volunteer placement aligns with operational requirements.
- Program Innovation & Growth: Continuously evaluate the volunteer program to identify gaps and implement special initiatives—such as developing a Volunteer Lead/Leadership program—to increase the program's reach, efficiency, and impact.
- Event Support: Assist in planning and executing community events; participate in staff meetings and provide cross-departmental support as needed.
What We’re Looking For:
- Exceptional Communicator: Strong written and verbal skills with comfort in public speaking, professional emailing, and handling sensitive private discussions.
- Organized Self-Starter: Proven ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and juggle complex schedules and deadlines.
- Mission-Aligned Leader: A personal faith and comfort in a Catholic ministry environment; passionate about community service and people development.
- Conflict & People Management: Experience in conflict resolution and a preferred background in management or volunteer coordination.
- Tech & Physical Readiness: Competent in Microsoft Office and CRM/volunteer databases; ability to lift 50 lbs. to assist in the pantry or donation center.
- Language & Education: College degree preferred; fluency in Spanish is a plus.
