Outdoor Education Program Coordinator

About Post 84:

Post 84 is a student-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit and one of Washington’s largest student-run organizations, based in central and south Seattle. We run 16-18 trips a year (about 52 days total, 12-120 students per trip, mostly Seattle Public Schools students), teaching outdoor skills and helping students step outside their comfort zone. Post 84 operates as a Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Venture Crew.

Summary:

The OE Program Coordinator works with the Executive Director, Assistant Director/Wilderness Program Director, and student leadership to oversee all trip programming—attending all trips, related meetings, weekly EC and staff meetings, and monthly board meetings. Staff collaborate with student leaders on inclusion and equity and work well with high schoolers from diverse backgrounds. Reports to the Executive Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Oversee trip preparation for all trips
  • Serve as point person for student trip leads
  • Meet regularly with trip leads during the 8-week lead-up, checking progress and offering support
  • Recruit chaperones and serve as their point of contact
  • Attend pre-trip meetings and trainings; scout trip locations as needed
  • Handle adult-required reservation tasks (e.g., contracts, contact info)
• Attend and oversee all trips
  • 8-10 trips totaling about 35 days, 30-100 students
  • Provide oversight and a “safety net” for trip operations, mentoring and supporting trip leads
  • Coordinate adult staff/chaperones and serve as facilities point of contact (camp hosts, rangers, etc.)
  • Facilitate debriefs with chaperones and students
  • Pick up, drive and drop off rental trucks/vans as required
• Help maintain and organize gear storage at Post’s main office/gear room, in partnership with WTA
  • Keep the gear room clean, organized, and accessible for trip prep and pickup
  • Track gear inventory and flag items needing repair, replacement, or restocking
• Support the director team and other programming / organizational operations
  • Attend Wilderness trips when needed and available
  • Be on call to support Wilderness trips, when not attending
  • Handle additional administrative duties as needed
• Help ensure Post 84’s programming and operations comply with all Boy Scouts of America (BSA) protocols
• Respond quickly when contacted - response within 24 hours, ideally same day
• Attend meetings, events, and mandatory trips:
  • Weekly in-person Executive Committee meetings (Wednesdays at 7:30am)
  • Monthly in-person board meetings (first Monday of each month at 7pm)
  • Executive Committee retreat at the start of the school year (Early September)
  • 2 Staff trainings per year (Fall & Spring)
  • Annual staff overnight training (typically March)
  • Annual fundraising Gala (March)
  • At least one session of Desert School (May)

Minimum qualifications:

• High school diploma
• Current Wilderness First Responder certification, or complete WFR training within three months of hire (paid for by Post)
• Safe driving record with consistent access to a vehicle
• Camping/outdoor recreation experience
• Education experience including outdoor/environmental education, leadership skills, and youth mentorship
• Experience working with high-school age youth
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and 25 or older (Post will run a background check before hiring)

Desired Qualifications:

• Significant outdoor experience (naturalism, marine biology, basic wood carving/knife skills, firebuilding, shelterbuilding, knot tying, tarp shelters, kayaking)
• Bachelor’s degree (or significant experience) in education or related field
• At least one year of experience in high-school education, outdoor/environmental education, or overnight summer camps
• Experience teaching leadership skills
• Nonprofit management experience, including any of: finance, fundraising, outreach, media, web design, development, administration, human resources, etc.

• Experience in supporting adolescent students in leadership development
• Understanding of how to make outdoor experiences accessible to students who face systemic barriers to participation
