    Membership Development Officer (Latin America)

    Department: Membership and Development

    Reports To: Membership Manager

    Location: Remote

    Role Purpose

    The Membership Development Officer (Latin America) is responsible for the growth, engagement, and support of Humanists International’s network across the Latin American region. Reporting to the Membership Manager, this role focuses on strengthening the presence of humanism in the region by recruiting new Member organizations, supporting existing ones, and fostering the development of Young Humanists. The Officer acts as a bridge between the global office and regional members, ensuring that resources, communications, and leadership programs are linguistically accessible and culturally relevant to the Latin American context.

    Key Responsibilities

    Regional Membership Development and Support

    • Act as the primary point of contact for Members, Associates, and Young Humanists in Latin America, providing support in both Spanish and English (and ideally Portuguese).
    • Proactively identify and recruit prospective new Member organizations and Associates across Latin America to expand the regional network.
    • Conduct due diligence on membership applications from the region for review by the Membership Manager and the Board.
    • Assist the Membership Manager with general tasks related to the global membership, supporting administrative, data, or communication needs across the wider international network as required.
    • Assist regional members with the translation and cultural adaptation of Humanist resources, campaigns, and digital assets.
    • Support the Membership Manager in monitoring the annual Grants program specifically for Latin American projects, ensuring high-quality applications and effective evaluation of outcomes.
    • Maintain accurate regional data within the membership database (CiviCRM).

    Communications and Regional Outreach

    • Draft and translate regular communications, newsletters, and updates specifically tailored for the Latin American membership.
    • Manage regional social media presence or sub-groups (e.g., Facebook or WhatsApp networks) to foster community and engagement among Spanish and Portuguese-speaking humanists.
    • Collaborate with the Fundraising and Communications Officer to highlight Latin American humanist stories, success, and human rights concerns to the global network.

    Event and Training Coordination

    • Provide direct support in the planning, promotion, and delivery of the World Humanist Congress, particularly regarding regional participation and logistics.
    • Actively assist in organizing the World Humanist Congress by coordinating with host organizations, managing regional delegations, and ensuring the event's programming is inclusive of Latin American perspectives.
    • Support the planning and delivery of regional training events, seminars, and webinars designed to build capacity for Latin American organizations.
    • Provide logistical and linguistic support during international events where Latin American representation is involved.

    Regional Leadership and Young Humanists

    • Implement the Humanist Leadership Skills Program within Latin America, adapting training materials to meet the specific needs of regional leaders.
    • Serve as the regional lead for Young Humanists International, identifying and supporting young activists and student groups in Latin America.
    • Develop and lead regional campaigns that resonate with the specific human rights and secularist challenges faced in the region.

    Personal Specification

    Essential:

    • Native or professional fluency in Spanish and excellent command of English.
    • Proven experience in network building, community organizing, or membership support.
    • Deep understanding of the socio-political and cultural landscape of Latin America, particularly regarding secularism and human rights.
    • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders across different time zones.
    • Well-organized, efficient, and able to work independently as part of a remote global team.
    • Strong general IT skills (Google Workspace, WordPress, etc.).
    • Experience or willingness to learn CRM software (e.g., CiviCRM).

    Desired:

    • Proficiency in Portuguese is highly desirable.
    • Direct experience with humanist activism or human rights advocacy within Latin America.
    • Experience in translating or localizing educational and promotional materials.
    • Knowledge of the legal frameworks for NGOs and non-profits within various Latin American jurisdictions.
    • Experience with digital content creation (Adobe Suite, Canva) or social media management.
    • A strong commitment to the philosophy and values of Humanists International.
