    Description

    Survivor Justice Center is seeking a Director of Finance to oversee all aspects of the Center’s accounting functions, guide financial decisions, identify and mitigate financial risk, and safeguard the organization’s financial health. The successful candidate will be responsible for financial planning and budgeting, directing ledger accounts, preparing financial statements and forecasts, overseeing employee payroll, developing and implementing all accounting policies and procedures, coordinating audit activities, and managing banking relationships. This position is an integral member of Survivor Justice Center’s executive team, reports to the Executive Director, and contributes directly to the implementation of organizational goals and objectives.

    Responsibilities

    Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

    • Developing and implementing financial strategies that align with Survivor Justice Center’s mission and goals;
    • Developing and managing budgets, including the organization’s annual budget, programmatic budgets, and budgets for public and private funders;
    • Developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures that support the organization’s mission and further strategic plans; and,
    • Collaborating with senior leadership to establish financial objectives, monitor key performance indicators, and ensure compliance with evolving regulations.

    Budgeting, Forecasting, and Financial Reporting

    • Planning and directing all financial activities, including the preparation, review, oversight, and verification of requisitions, in-kind contributions, bank reconciliations, invoices, accounting records, accounts payable, and payroll;
    • Preparing and presenting (monthly and quarterly) financial statements, budgets and investment reports for the internal leadership team, Board committees, and Board of Directors (ex. Statement of Activities, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Forecasts and Liquidity Analyses, and Budget Projections);
    • Preparing monthly budget reports for all active grants to accurately and efficiently manage the spend down of grant funds in accordance with all regulations, agreements, and funding stipulations;
    • Overseeing the finance component of grant reporting and assisting in the preparation and review of quarterly and year-end reports for funding sources;
    • Managing and reviewing the allocation of expenses to various funding sources (government contracts, grants, subawards, and private sources) to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, grant agreements, and funding restrictions;
    • Training and supporting other members of the management team on budgeting and financial reporting activities; and,
    • Monitoring cash flow to ensure adequate funding for operations.

    Accounting Policies and Procedures

    • Developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures consistent with established accounting standards for financial controls;
    • Collaborating with senior leadership to establish financial objectives and ensure compliance with evolving regulations;
    • Supervising financial control systems, including general ledger, budgeting, and cost allocation of expenses;
    • Ensuring organizational policies and procedures are followed as they relate to procurement, fiscal, and accounting, and they meet the required federal, state, and local funding terms and regulations;
    • Reviewing and approving all entries into the general ledger such as vouchers, accounts payable, bank reconciliations, payroll, and accounts receivables and,
    • Reviewing and directing the monthly closing of the books.

    External Relationships

    • Developing and maintaining productive working relationships with accounting and finance staff at partner organizations;
    • Developing and managing relationships with the Center’s banking contacts, investment managers, and auditors;
    • Maintaining positive relationships with funders, vendors, and other stakeholders; and,
    • Serving as the organization’s liaison to external auditors, regulators, and financial institutions.

    Compliance and Risk Management

    • Identifying and mitigating the organization’s financial risk, including risk related to payroll and 403b compliance and other potential liabilities;
    • Maintaining accurate accounting records and underlying support in compliance with GAAP and GASB requirements;
    • Ensuring financial compliance with public and private funding requirements;
    • Maintaining a schedule for preparing and submitting invoices as required by funders;
    • Filing all required government compliance documents including 990 and information returns;
    • Reviewing semi-monthly payroll to ensure that employees’ pay and deductions are accurate, approved, and calculated in compliance with Wage and Hour laws;
    • Reviewing significant employee service dates to ensure that employees are offered all benefits as they become eligible and accruals are updated as needed; and,
    • Ensuring compliance with all company-wide payroll related filing requirements and the timely payment of all required deposits.

    Audits

    • Working with external auditors to prepare documentation in accordance with GAAP standards and oversee the organization’s annual audit and tax preparation;
    • Preparing financial documentation to support other grant, contract, and programmatic audits by individual funders; and,
    • Staffing the Board Audit Committee and ensuring committee fulfills their fiduciary responsibility.

    Other

    • Supervising the day-to-day work and professional development of Accounting Administrator;
    • Training, evaluating, and providing professional mentorship to team members; and,
    • Performing other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field
    • CPA or MBA preferred
    • Minimum of five years’ experience in nonprofit finance, preferably in a senior role
    • Significant experience with federal grant budgeting and reporting
    • Thorough knowledge of GAAP standards and financial reporting requirements
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with personnel on all levels inside and external to the organization
    • Strong leadership, analytic, and organizational skills
    • Proficient with accounting systems and related technologies
    • Experience supervising and developing staff
    • Commitment to Survivor Justice Center’s mission and values

    Benefits

    Annual salary for this full-time exempt position ranges from $125,000 to $135,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
