Job Role: Deputy Editor, Filmmaker Magazine

Reports to: Content Director, Filmmaker Magazine

Location: New York (remote and in-person)

    Employment Type: Full-Time

    About the Role

Filmmaker Magazine seeks a Deputy Editor to play a crucial role in executing the title’s mission of providing inspiring and actionable guidance to active and aspiring filmmakers, while illuminating the ever-evolving filmmaking ecosystem for inside players and passionate enthusiasts alike. Reporting to the Content Director, this role involves dreaming up, assigning, editing, and writing stories, as well as potentially speaking on microphone and appearing on camera and on stage.

The Deputy Editor will be enthusiastic about translating their passion for film across multiple channels, from print and digital to social, video, and audio. You'll bring lots of ideas, a strong network of potential contributors, and experience with a range of editorial work, from line editing to social media. This is a creative role, but requires strong organizational and administrative skills to manage Filmmaker’s workflow. The ideal candidate will combine an evolved editorial sensibility with keen attention to detail, a proven ability to manage a range of projects simultaneously, and experience taking ideas from conception to completion.

As a program of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, a 46-year-old nonprofit dedicated to supporting independent film and media creators, Filmmaker plays a vital role in advancing The Gotham’s mission and is a revenue-generating program supported through subscriptions, Gotham memberships, advertising, sponsorship, and live events.

    Key Responsibilities

    Editorial Leadership & Story Development

    • Partner closely with the Content Director to shape Filmmaker’s editorial vision across print, digital, social, video, audio, and live events.
    • Generate, evaluate, and refine story ideas that speak to both working filmmakers and deeply engaged film culture audiences.
    • Assign, edit, and publish features, interviews, service journalism, festival coverage, and reported essays.
    • Contribute as a writer and editor, producing original reporting and commentary as needed.
    • Uphold Filmmaker’s editorial standards, voice, and mission across all platforms.

    Multimedia & Platform Strategy

    • Help develop and execute Filmmaker’s multimedia strategy, including podcasts, video, newsletters, and social platforms.
    • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners on audio, video, and live programming, including on-mic, on-camera, or on-stage participation where appropriate.
    • Think holistically about how stories travel across formats and audiences, adapting ideas to platform-specific strengths.
    • Support editorial innovation and experimentation with new formats, distribution models, and audience engagement strategies.

    Editorial Operations & Production

    • Oversee editorial workflows and production schedules to ensure timely, high-quality publication across all platforms.
    • Coordinate editors, writers, designers, freelancers, and vendors to move projects smoothly from idea to execution.
    • Manage CMS and editorial tools, helping improve systems, documentation, and processes.
    • Track budgets, contracts, invoices, and payments related to editorial production.
    • Anticipate bottlenecks and troubleshoot production challenges proactively.

    Collaboration & Institutional Integration

    • Serve as a key liaison between editorial and design, marketing, partnerships, and events teams.
    • Support distribution and circulation efforts, including delivery of Filmmaker Magazine to festivals, arthouse theaters, and film markets.
    • Manage subscription operations and serve as a primary point of contact for both individual and institutional subscribers, addressing inquiries, renewals, and fulfillment issues.
    • Help onboard, mentor, and support contributors and junior editorial staff.
    • Represent Filmmaker professionally within the film community and broader media ecosystem.

    Qualifications:

    • 4+ years of editorial experience in journalism, publishing, or digital media
    • Proven ability to edit and develop both longform and shortform stories, from razor-sharp line edits to bigger-picture changes
    • Sharp commissioning instincts, able to shape stories for a range of audiences across multimedia formats
    • Direct experience with keeping publishing timelines on track and managing multiple moving parts
    • A strong and collaborative project manager, with good instincts for proactively liaising with stakeholders
    • Experience with social media and newsletters
    • Established network of film industry contributors
    • Enthusiasm for independent cinema and Filmmaker’s mission, as well as a motivation to bring the magazine to more readers
