    About the Organization

    VietLead is a grassroots organization in Philadelphia and South Jersey that is creating a vision and strategy for community self-determination, social justice, and cultural resilience. We are staffed and led by community members with collectively over 25 years serving our community and are committed to working from love and solidarity. Our programs include youth organizing, health navigation & healing, civic engagement, and community defense. We do this through a Heal.Resist.Grow. framework that focuses on a pathway to healing trauma in our communities, contesting for power to make systemic change, policy advocacy/campaign, and growing community-based solutions.

    Position Overview

    The Worker Rights Lead Organizer and Direct Service Manager reports directly to the Membership Director to plan and implement activities of the Worker Rights & Public Benefits Program Team. The position is a manager-level position within our organization and will be responsible for continuing to grow and develop the team’s ability to respond to the needs of Vietnamese low-wage workers in Philadelphia. The position also supervises direct service staff.

    Responsibilities

    The following responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.     Manage (overseeing the implementation of program):

    • Supervise one to three direct services staff, and support troubleshooting and advocacy on specific direct service questions related to public benefits for low-wage worker members and Vietnamese community members (e.g. SNAP, Medicaid and LIHEAP);
    • Plan program implementation (including workers rights trainings and public benefits clinics) with direct service staff, as well as with related committee members;
    • Manage program budgets, including continuously updating as new grants are acquired;
    • Support with managing program grants with the support of Membership Director and Executive Director;
    • Monitor program staff Leadership Trellis;
    • Monitor the development of Ladder of Engagement for base members;
    • Keep up to date on political conditions for the program, such as local, state, and national policies that have adverse impacts on the health and well-being of Vietnamese low-wage workers;
    • Conduct program evaluations and reflections with staff;
    • Maintain strategic and tactical relationships with partners in health, public benefits, and workers rights ecosystem in Philadelphia with Membership DIrector and Executive Director

    Own (take ownership of tasks & do the heavy lifting–responsible for the success or failure):

    • Direct Services program & individual staff workplan;
    • Organizing workplan, committee development, in partnership with Membership Director and other Lead organizers;
    • Lead facilitator of one member committee;
    • Holding some base relationships (including committee members) through doing 1:1s and follow ups
    • Alongside the Membership Director, lead the process of developing trainings that raise the consciousness, leadership, and skills of VietLead members;
    • Implement program membership structure;
    • Building out Socio-Emotional skills within Programs & base;
    • Creating group culture of support;
    • Planning staff hang-out events.

    Help (support with parts of the task while training up to own):

    • Coordinate with and be responsive to the Communications and Finance/Office Managers, including managing the program team’s budget and coordinating program related communications
    • Program Social Media: help with documentation of program activities and milestones for sharing to comms platforms
    • Cultivate a healthy program culture of joy, support, celebration, and shared planning of staff hang-out events
    • Write program reflections (Post-program season debriefs, Grant Reports)
    • Integrate campaign development into program
    • Incorporate narrative strategy tactics into program
    • Mediate conflict between base members

    Required Qualifications

    Must have experience working with immigrant, refugee, of-color and/or vulnerable communities. Minimum four years experience of full-season operation.

    • Experience working with direct service provision to community members (such as SNAP, LIHEAP, Medicaid, Rent Rebates, etc.);
    • Responsibly manage administrative and record keeping tasks related to the program and overall success of the organization.
    • Experience supervising organizers focused on base building and leadership development
    • Experience developing and implementing campaign strategy, especially led by working class members
    • Have some level of Vietnamese fluency and/or experience working and organizing in Vietnamese communities;
    • Experience organizing working class Asian immigrants
    • Experience developing and implementing political education and leadership development plans and curriculum
    • Experience in other base building, organizing and/or movement organizations
    • Strong commitment to VietLead’s strategy and values
    • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects at the same time
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
    • Strong peer­‐counseling, conflict­‐management and crisis management skills preferred
    • Knowledge in direct services, public benefits, & public policy.

    Work Environment / Physical Demands

    This position will work out of VietLead’s Philadelphia office at 320 Oregon Ave and at various partner sites and community locations; Hybrid work schedule of 2-3 days in-person / 2-3 days work from home contingent on in-person programming schedule and activities; able to work on a computer including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation; manual dexterity to operate a keyboard; able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

    Employment Terms

    This is an Exempt full time position at 32 hours per week. The estimated hourly rate is $34/hr-$40.50/hr, equivalent to an annual income range of $56,576-$67,392, commensurate with experience.
