Brand Strategy & Awareness Communications Consultant

Description
About the opportunity
WomenHeart is the nation's only patient-centered organization solely dedicated to the heart health of the nearly 48 million American women living with or at risk of heart disease. Founded in 1999 by three women heart attack survivors, we advance our mission through advocacy, community education, and the only national patient support network for women with heart disease.
After 25+ years of impact, we're at an inflection point. Heart disease is still the #1 killer of women, yet only about half of women recognize this. We're seeking a strategic communications consultant (individual or firm) to lead a brand strategy and awareness initiative that closes that gap—shaping direction at the leadership level, then guiding implementation alongside our team.
What you'd lead (scope highlights)
- Discovery & audit of current brand, messaging, and communications—assessed for effectiveness, accessibility, and inclusive representation
- Brand strategy: positioning, messaging architecture, voice, and brand guidelines for priority audiences
- Awareness & communications strategy with measurable goals, channel mix, and earned-media/thought-leadership planning
- WomenHeart Summit visibility: a repeatable, multi-year communications playbook for our signature annual convening
- Development support: translating brand gains into visibility that supports fundraising and partnerships
- Health equity & accessibility embedded throughout—centering communities most affected by heart health disparities and meeting WCAG 2.1 AA standards
A note on this engagement: This is a strategy role, not hands-on execution. It does not include website design or development, day-to-day social media posting, direct fundraising execution, or paid media buying. The consultant sets direction and builds the organization's capacity to carry it forward.
Our commitment to equity
Health equity is foundational to this work. We especially encourage consultants who bring lived or professional expertise in multicultural communications, accessibility, and authentic community engagement, and who can help us center the women most affected by heart health disparities throughout the brand and its messaging.
Who we're looking for
7+ years of senior-level brand strategy and integrated communications experience
A track record with mission-driven organizations (health, patient advocacy, or women's health preferred)
Demonstrated experience embedding health equity and accessibility into communications work
Experience partnering with lean nonprofit teams and development staff in a capacity-building way
