    Description

Campus Organization & Volunteer Coordinator (PHENND Fellow - AmeriCorps Vista)

    About Us

The Petey Greene Program supports the academic and career goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through high-quality tutoring and other educational programs, while serving to educate our volunteers and the public on the manifest injustice in our carceral system.

Founded in 2008, the PGP has supported over 20,000 students in over 130 correctional facilities and reentry programs, recruiting more than 8,500 volunteer tutors and instructors from 30 universities in seven states and DC. In 2015, The PGP expanded to Philadelphia following a 2013 impact-study that showed that the PGP’s New Jersey tutoring program accelerated test score progress by more than two (2.3) full grade levels during one semester (Kowalski, 2013) In 2024, in Philadelphia we trained over 90 volunteers and provided career readiness and educational support to over 200 currently and formerly incarcerated students.

We educate the general public on the systemic economic, social and legal inequities that affect those impacted by the carceral system. PGP volunteers, typically college aged, complete over 10 hours of rigorous training and professional development as part of their experience with our organization.

The PGP proposes a unique, evidence-based solution to the challenge of creating economic opportunity for formerly incarcerated people: holistic, personalized educational or upskilling support to meet personal goals. The PGP’s curriculum support includes GED and HSE level math, literacy, writing and sciences, and college readiness tutoring to build the foundational groundwork critical for students to achieve academic certificates and economic opportunity. Our College Bridge Program is designed to help students upskill, and develop the critical thinking, writing and reading skills that are necessary to pursue employment and post-secondary education, while fostering a sense of educational self-efficacy and self-confidence that will support them in these pursuits.

    Member Duties

The VISTA with the Petey Greene Program will work on a Philly based team as part of a larger National organization. The VISTA will focus on strengthening and expanding our volunteer pool of university students and campus organizations. The VISTA will focus on four main areas:

    • We recently developed a Guide for PGP Campus Organizations. The VISTA will lead a supportive and intentional roll out of this guide to the existing PGP Campus Organizations and Leadership Groups and build the volunteer pool at additional universities.
    • The VISTA will begin to develop work study and internship opportunities at around 4 local universities.
    • The VISTA will build intentional recruitment pipelines in order to support longer semesters for volunteers and students.
    • The VISTA will maintain volunteer support at youth partners. Through these three project areas, the VISTA will learn or strengthen public speaking, community organizing, and project planning skills.
