Coastal Advocate – MID COAST

The Coastal Advocate will work in our mid-coast office and lead community-based advocacy efforts in support of One Hundred Miles’ mission to protect Georgia’s coast, strengthen community resilience, and promote responsible growth. The Advocate builds relationships with residents, community leaders, partner organizations, and decision-makers to advance strategic campaigns that influence land-use policies, development decisions, conservation outcomes, and public investment priorities. Working as part of a cross-functional team, the Coastal Advocate develops and implements advocacy strategies, mobilizes community action, supports organizational campaigns, and serves as a trusted regional representative of One Hundred Miles.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the lead advocacy representative for assigned counties within Georgia's Mid Coast region, building trusted relationships with local decision-makers, community leaders, partner organizations, and residents.
• Lead place-based advocacy campaigns that advance organizational priorities, influence land-use decisions, and promote conservation, resilience, and smart-growth outcomes.
• Increase civic engagement by building coalitions and effective partnerships with neighborhood, faith-based, environmental justice, civic, and community organizations.
• Ensure advocacy strategies are informed by and responsive to historically underrepresented communities and populations disproportionately affected by development and environmental challenges.
• Implement organizing strategies, tactics, and tools that increase engagement with residents, community groups, neighborhood associations, faith organizations, and partner nonprofits.
• Serve as an issue expert and represent One Hundred Miles at public meetings, hearings, workshops, and stakeholder convenings. These meetings may occur during office or non-office hours.
• Monitor local government decisions affecting the natural and built environment in OHM counties along the mid coast.
• Prepare reports, presentations, and organizational updates that demonstrate progress and impact.
• Collaborate with colleagues to align advocacy efforts with organizational priorities, performance objectives, and annual goals.
• Stay informed on issues affecting Georgia's coast, including land use, conservation, resilience, environmental justice, and community development.
• Participate in professional networks, coalitions, and training opportunities that strengthen advocacy effectiveness and advance organizational goals.

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent lived and professional experience.
• At least three years of experience in one or more of the following:
  • Community organizing
  • Advocacy or public policy
  • Environmental conservation
  • Land-use planning
  • Community development
  • Civic engagement
• Demonstrated experience building partnerships and engaging diverse stakeholders.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience facilitating meetings, workshops, and public engagement activities.
• Ability to attend occasional evening meetings and travel throughout coastal Georgia.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Highly Preferred qualifications:

• Experience with environmental conservation, coastal resilience, land-use planning, or smart-growth issues.
• Experience working with local governments and public decision-making processes.
• Knowledge of Georgia coastal communities and regional development trends.
• Experience organizing community-based campaigns and managing volunteers.
