    Description

    Somos Un Pueblo Unido is seeking a Communications Director to help advance immigrant rights, economic justice, and community power across New Mexico. This leadership position will oversee strategic communications, media relations, digital engagement, storytelling, and communications team management to strengthen the organization's impact and visibility statewide.

    Communications Director (Bilingual English/Spanish)

    Location: Santa Fe, New Mexico (Hybrid or partial remote work possible)

    Schedule: Full-Time, 32-hour work week

    Reports To: Executive Director

    About Somos Un Pueblo Unido

    Somos Un Pueblo Unido is a statewide membership-based racial and economic justice organization dedicated to organizing immigrant families and low-wage workers across New Mexico. Through community organizing, leadership development, grassroots advocacy, civic engagement, litigation, and policy work, we build long-term community power and advance economic and social justice.

    Position Summary

    The Communications Director is responsible for increasing public awareness of Somos Un Pueblo Unido's mission, programs, campaigns, and policy initiatives. This position will lead strategic communications efforts, manage communications staff and consultants, and strengthen relationships with media, donors, members, and community partners.

    Essential Responsibilities

    Strategic Communications

    • Develop and implement communications strategies that support organizational priorities, campaigns, and fundraising goals.
    • Align public relations, donor relations, and campaign communications.
    • Create compelling messaging and storytelling strategies.

    Media Relations

    • Serve as the organization's primary media contact.
    • Build relationships with journalists, media outlets, and community partners.
    • Draft press releases, media advisories, statements, and talking points.
    • Coordinate media requests and follow-up communications.

    Digital Communications

    • Oversee newsletters, action alerts, and supporter communications.
    • Manage and grow social media platforms.
    • Collaborate on website content and digital communications strategies.

    Team Leadership

    • Supervise communications staff, contractors, and consultants.
    • Oversee website maintenance, graphic design, research, polling, and social media projects.
    • Provide media training and communications support to staff and community leaders.

    Evaluation & Reporting

    • Track and evaluate communications efforts and campaign effectiveness.
    • Prepare reports and recommendations to improve communications strategies.

    Required Qualifications

    • Strong commitment to social, economic, and racial justice.
    • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
    • Experience in communications, public relations, journalism, advocacy communications, nonprofit communications, or related fields.
    • Experience developing strategic communications plans.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills.
    • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
    • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel throughout New Mexico.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience supervising staff, consultants, or contractors.
    • Experience with media relations and earned media.
    • Familiarity with EveryAction, Constant Contact, Canva, Adobe, Microsoft Office, or similar platforms.
    • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
