Monteverde Friends School seeks: Fifth and Sixth-Grade Teacher (in English)
Monteverde Friends School seeks an experienced, dynamic, and creative teacher to lead our fifth and sixth-grade class beginning in August 2026. The ideal candidate will have experience establishing a middle school classroom culture that supports students socially, emotionally, and academically. Experience in elementary literacy and math pedagogy is required. Strong candidates will also have interest or expertise in Quaker education, outdoor education, working with an assistant or co-teacher, and teaching students with diverse learning styles.
Note: This position requires a native English speaker.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the lead teacher and advisor to 16-18 students.
- Teach reading, writing, math, and social studies in English.
- Support students’ social-emotional development.
- Teach a weekly class in Quaker values.
- Maintain attendance and grade records.
- Write reports on the progress of all students at the end of the semester.
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences once per semester and as needed.
- Maintain contact with students’ families.
- Supervise students during recess and lunch as assigned.
- Participate in committee work.
- Lead mini-courses each quarter (a weekly elective class taught on Friday afternoons to a mixed-age group).
- Participate in weekly Meeting for Worship and the life of the school community.
- Attend staff meetings, parent meetings, and other meetings as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in an education-related field.
- Classroom experience working with children in grades 3-6.
- Intermediate-level Spanish is helpful but not required.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary as determined by step on the salary scale.
- Health care through the Costa Rican national health care system (CCSS).
- Participation in national teacher retirement plan (Magisterio managed by JUPEMA).
