    Description

    Position: Middle School History Teacher for 7th-8th Grade

    Where: IN PERSON at 610 W 112th Street, New York, NY 10025

    When: Weekly, November 2026 – May 2027

    Time/Date: Mondays - Part time hourly paid (4:00-6:30 pm)

    Liberty LEADS is currently seeking an enthusiastic and creative History Teacher to co-teach an interdisciplinary 7th and 8th grade course titled " Posters, power and persuasion - Propaganda Posters Through History" in collaboration with our Art Teacher.

    This course will explore how governments, political movements, organizations, and individuals have utilized visual images and persuasive messages to influence public opinion throughout history. Each session will combine historical context with visual aids to illustrate the power of persuasive media​.

    Course Objectives:

    - Explain the concept, purpose, and vocabulary of propaganda (e.g., persuasion, audience, symbolism, slogans, emotional appeal, visual manipulation).

    - Analyze propaganda posters as primary sources, identifying historical context, intended audience, and persuasive techniques.

    - Evaluate bias, perspective, selective information, and visual design elements.

    - Develop evidence-based interpretations of historical images.

    Curriculum Scope: The curriculum will begin with ancient Egyptian pyramids and statues, progressing through World War I and II, 20th-century political art, the Cold War, 1960s protest art, and modern digital media (memes).

    Final Project: Create original artwork that demonstrates successful techniques though history and have students reflect on subjects they feel strongly about create their own propaganda posters.

    The Liberty LEADS Program at Bank Street College is a college access and college success program serving students throughout New York City. We offer a comprehensive academic program and a wide range of resources for students in grades 5 through 12, Monday through Saturday, for 11 months of the year. Liberty LEADS works to ensure that youth with few economic resources have access to the supports necessary to realize their potential, make positive contributions to society, and smoothly make the transition into college or an entry-level career. The program is guided by the principle that all children have gifts, talents, and great potential and can contribute to one another's social and academic growth.

    Responsibilities:

      • Create, adapt and implement history curriculum that is visual fun and engaging for groups of 10 students online or up to 25 students in person
      • Engage students and modify curriculum according to needs of students and the medium being used with assistance from Liberty LEADS Program Coordinator and advisory staff
      • If circumstances require us to switch to online classes, Instructors must have reliable WIFI and computers and must have cameras on at all times and appear on camera in order to persuade students to communicate and participate in the same way.
      • Manage in person and remote classrooms using positive behavior management strategies
      • Meet regularly with the Liberty LEADS Program Coordinator for supervision and debriefing
      • Prepare presentation with students for ‘end of year’ celebration
      • Provide lesson plans to the advisor's supervisor one week in advance for approval.

    Qualifications:

      • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in World History or a related field; Master’s preferred
      • NYS Teacher Certification or professional proficiency in content area preferred
      • Special Education teachers strongly urged to apply
      • Must possess strong communication skills and knowledge of group development
      • Experience working with middle school youth and knowledge of child development
      • Experience teaching classes using Zoom platform preferred
      • Reliable WIFI and computer access

    Hourly Paid Rate Range $40-$50
