Description
Job Summary
The Community Organizing Supervisor leads a grassroots organizing team building disability power in the Greater Rochester area by engaging the Disability Community, as well as developing and strengthening ties with local community organizations to promote issues of importance to the Community through coalition and collaboration.
Responsibilities
- Hire, train, supervise, and manage Rochester-based advocates and organizers, providing direct supervision and support to all direct reports
- Conduct regular one-on-one supervision meetings, performance management, and professional development support for team members
- Establish and monitor individual work plans, goals, and productivity expectations for supervised staff
- Facilitate regular team meetings to coordinate activity, share information, and align priorities
- Recruit organization members and build a dedicated base of volunteers within the Disability Community in Rochester and the surrounding area
- Develop and implement an outreach and mobilization plan for community meetings, mobilization efforts, and advocacy/activism activities locally and in Albany and Washington
- Design and implement workshops and trainings for community members to better understand issues of importance, promote organizational priorities, and build community
- Train members in advocacy and leadership skills such as lobbying, event planning, media communication, and storytelling, while helping instill the organization's values to guide interactions
- Work with Albany and Washington, D.C.-based staff and volunteers to inform the organization's advocacy work based on member priorities, and provide opportunities for members to be involved in that work
- Work with leadership and the advocacy team to identify, plan, and execute local campaigns that benefit CDR's state and federal advocacy
- Manage data and reporting requirements, including membership outreach, volunteer activities, turnout, and volunteer profiles
- Identify and build relationships with other organizations locally and throughout the state to advance CDR's mission
- Regularly write blog posts and newsletter articles on advocacy issues and organizational work
- Represent the organization at community meetings, coalitions, and public forums as assigned
- Perform other duties as assigned
Experience
- Dedicated organizing experience of at least three years, with a strong preference for someone with a deep understanding of the experience of disability with a preference for lived or personal experience.
- Strong leadership, managerial and project management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
- A self-starter and creative thinker that is detail-oriented with a proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Passion for disability rights and independent living.
- Flexibility in work planning
- Ability to work some nights and weekends, as required.
- Fluency in Spanish and/or ASL is preferred.
- Commitment to an equitable society and an understanding of the intersectional nature of Disability with other marginalized populations.
