Position Summary
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) serves as a strategic partner to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is responsible for translating organizational strategy into effective execution. The COO provides leadership across RVC's programs and operations, ensuring teams, resources, systems, and priorities are aligned to advance the organization's mission and long-term goals.
As a senior organizational leader, the COO strengthens operational and financial performance, develops organizational systems, supports and develops department leaders, and ensures consistent execution across the organization. The COO works closely with the CEO to build organizational capacity, manage growth and change, and maintain high-performing, collaborative culture.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy and Organizational Execution
- Partner with the CEO to translate the organization's strategic direction into annual operating priorities, measurable goals, and clear ownership across departments.
- Lead organizational planning and performance management, establishing key performance indicators, and regularly evaluating progress toward strategic, operational, financial, and programmatic goals.
- Identify organizational challenges, opportunities, and resource needs and work with leadership to develop and implement solutions that strengthen long-term organizational effectiveness.
Operations & Organizational Effectiveness
- Provide executive oversight of day-to-day organizational operations, ensuring systems, processes, policies, and resources effectively support RVC's mission and strategic objectives.
- Direct supervision of program and operation staff.
- Evaluate and improve internal systems, technologies, workflows, and cross departmental processes to increase efficiency and communication.
- Partner with the CEO and appropriate staff to develop and manage the annual operating budget, departmental budgets, forecasts, resource allocation, and financial performance.
Executive Support
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO providing data, analysis, recommendations, and organizational perspectives to support effective decision making.
- Support Board and committee engagement by providing organizational performance updates, operational and financial insights, and implementation follow-through; represent RVC with key partners, funders, and stakeholders as appropriate.
Team Leadership & Culture
- Lead, coach, and develop department leaders, establishing clear expectations and accountability while building leadership capacity throughout the organization.
- Oversee organizational structure, talent strategy, performance management, employee development, and human resources systems in partnership with the HR Manager and CEO.
- Foster a collaborative, results-oriented, and mission-driven culture while leading the organization through growth, change, and continuous improvement.
Board & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as a trusted strategic and operational advisor to the CEO, providing data, analysis, recommendations, and organizational perspective to support effective decision making.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, business, or related field. (Master’s preferred)
- 7+ years of experience in nonprofit leadership, programs, operations, or strategy roles.
- Demonstrated expertise in program budgeting and fiscal management.
- Experience managing human resources functions, including personnel, compensation, and recruiting.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of discretion, professionalism, and emotional intelligence.
Preferred
- Experience working closely with executive leadership or boards.
- Background in program management, operations, or consulting.
- Familiarity with nonprofit governance and fundraising environments.
