    Description

About LMACS: Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School (LMACS) is a small, public charter high school located in downtown Lowell, Massachusetts. We are dedicated to empowering students in grades 9–12 to achieve academic, social, and career success. Our non-traditional, competency-based program centers on building relationships, hands-on learning, and helping every student discover their unique path. LMACS serves a diverse student body—many of whom are over-age and under-credited—within a supportive, close-knit community where students are known, valued, and encouraged to thrive. Our mission-driven environment embraces each student’s personal and cultural identity and is committed to equity, inclusion, and preparing students for life after high school.

Position Overview: Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School (LMACS) seeks a dedicated and student-centered Special Education Coordinator to join our team. This role combines leadership, collaboration, and direct student support to ensure high-quality special education services that align with state and federal requirements and reflect the LMACS mission of supporting over-age, under-credited students in achieving academic, social, and career success.

The Special Education Coordinator oversees the implementation of all special education programs and services, provides case management and instructional support, and works closely with teachers, families, and the Student Support Team to foster inclusive, equitable learning environments.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Leadership & Compliance

    • Oversee compliance with all City, State, and Federal special education regulations and ensure timely and accurate reporting.
    • Maintain student records, including IEPs, evaluations, and service documentation.
    • Plan, coordinate, and conduct initial and reevaluation assessments.
    • Chair IEP Team meetings and ensure updates, service delivery, and progress reports are completed as required.
    • Facilitate SEPAC meetings and maintain strong communication with families about student services and progress.

    Student Services & Instructional Support

    • Serve as case manager for assigned students, ensuring services are delivered according to IEPs.
    • Provide direct support to students through inclusion, pull-out, or small-group instruction.
    • Collaborate with general education teachers using co-teaching and consultation models to support access to the curriculum.
    • Develop Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) as needed in collaboration with the school support team.

    Collaboration & School Culture

    • Partner with the Executive Director, Student Support Team, and faculty to ensure effective interventions and equitable access to learning.
    • Participate in professional development, team meetings, and school-wide initiatives focused on inclusion, trauma-informed practice, and student well-being.
    • Contribute to a positive, inclusive school culture that supports strong relationships and a sense of belonging for all students.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

    Why LMACS?

    • Small school community with a focus on meaningful relationships.
    • Emphasis on real-world learning, internships, and student-driven projects.
    • Ongoing professional growth and collaboration.
    • Opportunity to make a significant impact on students’ lives and futures.
