    Description

    Do you love making connections and building community? We are hiring a Membership Coordinator to help us welcome visitors each Sunday, answer their questions, and invite them into the life of First Church in Boston. Located in Back Bay, we welcome people from across the city each week as well as visitors from other parts of the country. We hope to find someone great at welcoming people with intercultural sensitivity to reflect our inclusive values as a Unitarian Universalist congregation. Prior knowledge of Unitarian Universalism preferred, but not required.

    The position is part-time, 10 hours/week, with most Sundays onsite from the Sunday following Labor Day to the 2nd Sunday in June. Other hours may be remote for follow-up with visitors, connecting with staff, and planning outreach and engagement opportunities. Starting late August, 2026.     JOB DESCRIPTION: MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR

    PURPOSE: The Membership Coordinator supports the mission and operations of First Church in Boston by welcoming and tracking visitors to First Church, including assisting with outreach efforts to attract visitors. Secondarily, the Membership Coordinator helps to foster engagement of the Members and Friends of the church by encouraging their participation in congregational activities that help to meet their spiritual and social needs.

    REPORTS TO/SUPERVISED BY: Senior Minister

    WORKS WITH: Senior Minister and other clergy, including Intern Ministers; Greeters and other Sunday service volunteers; Standing Committee members and/or other congregants engaged in the work of membership development and engagement.

    CLASSIFICATION, LOCATION, and SCHEDULE: Part-time, hourly (10 hours/week; 42 weeks, late Aug. to mid-June). Onsite Sundays from approximately 10am-1pm with additional time able to be remote. As needed, work may include some evenings, weekends, and religious holidays.

    PERIODIC EVALUATIONS: 30-day and 90-day initial evaluations; Annual evaluation, thereafter, in June; conducted by the Senior Minister with input from the Standing Committee or their designee.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • HS diploma or its equivalent. Some college preferred.
    • Knowledge and understanding of Unitarian Universalism or demonstrated willingness to learn.
    • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to promote clear, effective, and professional communication.
    • Proficient desktop computer skills for email communication.
    • Willingness and comfort learning membership database software (Realm).
    • Must be able to move freely through the building and lift 20 pounds.
    • Discretion is required.
    • A CORI check will be performed.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Sunday Morning Visitors

    o Greet and welcome visitors, including during Coffee Hour.

    o Help develop and support a team of volunteer greeters in collaboration with lay leader for greeters.

    o Track visitors and contacts in database software (Realm).

    o Follow-up with each visitor.

    o Prepare information packets and/or a welcome table for visitors.

    Events

    o Work with the Senior Minister to offer opportunities to learn more about First Church, Unitarian Universalism, and/or membership.

    o Develop and lead occasional opportunities for First Church to grow in skills of welcoming newcomers.

    Members and Friends

    o Interact and communicate with the congregation to ensure that they are aware of opportunities that match their interests and capabilities while actively supporting and encouraging meaningful member participation.

    o Help to create personal connections among visitors, new members, and established community members.

    Staff and Collegial Relationships

    o Meet regularly with the Senior Minister.

    o Participate in staff meetings and other administrative activities as appropriate and assigned

    o Participates regularly with UU Membership Professionals Association, with financial support from the church.
