    Description

    Qualifications:

    • Commitment to the philosophy of self-determination of all persons, including persons with disabilities.
    • Knowledge of the Independent Living Movement Philosophy and local laws and regulations.
    • Knowledge of assistive technology and accessibility standards with the skills necessary to procure appropriate community and home equipment and adaptations for individuals and communities needing them.
    • Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills. Ability to be a team player, take supervision, act with professional department and confidentiality.
    • Experience with varied populations and individuals and families with special needs. Knowledge of ADA, IDEA, Section 504 and other pertinent federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
    • Must have reliable transportation including current driver's license, registration, and insurance to attend necessary meetings and to visit consumers in their homes when needed.

    Responsibilities:

    These are considered essential functions of the job, which the applicant must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation. Following training and supervision as assigned:

    • Serve as a knowledgeable resource and advocate for the disability community, providing support and guidance on a range of issues.
    • Assist individuals with disabilities in accessing services, benefits, and resources they are entitled to.
    • Educate and raise awareness within the community about the rights, needs, and challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
    • Collaborate with community organizations, government agencies, and service providers to improve accessibility and inclusion.
    • Conduct assessments to identify individual needs and develop personalized action plans to address those needs effectively.
    • Offer counseling and emotional support to individuals and their families, promoting empowerment and self-advocacy.
    • Provide guidance on assistive technology, communication strategies, and accessibility accommodations.
    • Attend meetings, conferences, and community events to represent the organization and advocate for the disability community.
    • Maintain accurate records, compile reports, and track outcomes of services provided.
    • Provide diversity and training to area employers, community leaders, service groups, churches, first responders, hospital staff, and others to make them aware of the rights and community inclusion benefits gained because of the full participation of persons with disabilities in their communities at all levels.
    • Mentor consumers for involvement in systems education and advocacy and appropriate legislative change.
    • Answer Information and Referral requests from individuals and organizations regarding Access Independence’s mission, programs, and services. Refer or handle as appropriate.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director or Executive Director, and Lead Advocate.

    Level of Language Proficiency
