    Organization Overview

    Opportunity Communities – or OppCo --provides locally-based non-profit community developers with administrative and core business supports that offer the benefits available in a larger-scale entity without losing local independence and control. By centralizing financial management, purchasing, human resources, data and evaluation, information technology, and other management functions, and by sharing expertise in core programs central to the business of community developers (real estate, asset management, and tenant services), OppCo members are better able to meet need within their communities, achieve deeper impacts in core lines of business, and to ensure that change is equitable.

    Position Overview

    We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Handbook Writing Consultant for a 30-day, part-time contract to lead the review, development, and standardization of organizational handbooks across our network of member organizations.

    This consultant will be responsible for auditing, drafting, editing, and aligning handbook materials for the following entities:

    • OppCo
    • The Neighborhood Developers
    • North Shore Community Development Coalition
    • Lena Park Community Development Corporation

    The goal of this engagement is to ensure all handbooks are accurate, clearly written, consistent in structure and tone, and aligned with each organization’s policies, values, and operational needs.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct a comprehensive review of all existing organizational handbooks
    • Identify gaps, inconsistencies, outdated language, and compliance concerns
    • Draft, revise, and standardize handbook content across all member organizations
    • Collaborate with leadership and designated staff to gather policy updates and clarifications
    • Ensure language is clear, accessible, and professionally written
    • Create a consistent formatting and structural framework for all handbooks
    • Deliver finalized, polished handbook documents by the end of the 30-day contract
    • Provide a summary memo outlining key updates, recommendations, and any outstanding items

    Qualifications

    • Extensive experience in Human Resources with a strong understanding of employment law and regulatory compliance
    • Proven experience in professional writing, technical writing, HR documentation, or policy development
    • Experience drafting or revising employee or organizational handbooks strongly preferred
    • Strong editing, proofreading, and organizational skills
    • Ability to synthesize information from multiple stakeholders into cohesive documentation
    • Knowledge of HR best practices and policy compliance standards is a plus
    • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
    • Ability to work independently within a short-term contract timeline

    Deliverables

    By the end of the 30-day engagement, the consultant will provide:

    • Updated and standardized handbooks for each member organization
    • A unified formatting template for future handbook updates
    • A brief written summary of revisions and recommendations
