Climate One is the premier platform for the conversation about climate disruption. ABOUT THE POSITION
Climate One seeks a strategic, creative, and collaborative communications professional to help create, plan and implement our communications, audience development, marketing, and brand strategy. The Communications Manager will serve as a key partner to the Executive Director, and will work in collaboration with the Development Director to grow Climate One’s audience and impact. With Climate One’s 20th anniversary approaching in 2027, this is an exciting time for an entrepreneurial and creative leader to build on the program’s rich history and help shape the next 20 years of empowering climate conversations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Content creation and marketing:
- Create and publish content on Climate One's website and social media (LinkedIn, Bluesky, TikTok, YouTube) to promote weekly episodes
- Produce weekly email newsletter, episode graphics, and video trailers
Audience development:
- Develop and implement strategies to grow Climate One's audience across podcast, social, email, digital platforms, and live events
- Collaborate with radio marketing consultant to support radio station recruitment and retention
- Build and steward a vibrant listener community through virtual platforms and in-person events
- Review and respond to audience feedback to deepen engagement
- Lead paid media strategy to achieve event ticket sales and podcast download targets
- Track and report key metrics, qualitative feedback and milestones on a regular basis
Communications, marketing & development:
- In partnership with the Executive Director, develop and implement a strategic communications and marketing plan to build brand visibility, support audience growth, and deepen community engagement; recalibrate plan according to metrics
- With Development Director, manage production of Climate One's annual report and other fundraising material
- Lead promotion and marketing for annual flagship events such as the Stephen Schneider Award, Climate Ride, and SF Climate Week
- Own the visual identity of the organization by designing graphics across podcast episodes, events, video content, and other platforms that are bold, cohesive, and on brand
- Review, evaluate and respond to media inquiries
- Increase visibility of Climate One leaders and community
Vendor & operations management:
- Serve as primary liaison to communications and creative service vendors (marketing, printing, graphic design, photographers, web developers, promotional materials)
- Keep the Climate One website and functionality up to date, with support from web development consultants
Teamwide responsibilities:
- Support setup, greeting, refreshments, and other tasks during in-person programs and donor events
- Network with event attendees during receptions, make introductions, and foster social connections in the climate community
- Support collaborative communications efforts with Commonwealth Club staff
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in communications and marketing
- Demonstrated experience in strategic use of social media, email newsletters, SEO/AEO, earned and paid media, and other channels, to grow audience
- Strong writing skills with demonstrated ability to convey climate, energy, environment, and sustainability issues for both expert and general audiences
- Proficiency in graphic design and sound editing tools (Canva, Descript, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere)
- Proficiency in email marketing platforms (Campaign Monitor or similar) and podcast hosting/monetization platforms (Megaphone)
- Proficiency in CRM tools (Salesforce or similar) to support community stewardship and listener engagement
- Proficiency in CMS platforms (Drupal or similar) to maintain website presence
- Proficiency in digital productivity and remote collaboration tools (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom)
- Proficiency in data analysis
- Working knowledge of video editing tools like Adobe Premiere or CapCut to produce basic social media-first video clips
- Working knowledge of Associated Press style and journalistic standards
- Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to prioritize and delegate tasks, follow them through to completion, and manage multiple workflows
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Ability to interact effectively and professionally with staff, media, podcast listeners, Club guests, and the public
- Stay positive and adaptable as priorities shift for live events and weekly show content
Preferred:
- Experience with PR and media outreach
- Experience in event design and implementation
- Experience running communications at a nonprofit and/or climate-focused organization

Finalists will be asked to meet in person with Climate One leadership and other personnel at the Commonwealth Club office in San Francisco.
