Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) seeks an attorney with 1 to 5 years of experience, preferred, to join its Housing Unit. This permanent, full-time position is based in our Boston office and may require travel (reimbursable by GBLS) to courthouses and other activities in our service area. The position is focused on representing low-income tenants in summary process eviction actions in the Housing Court in Boston. The position may also require representing tenants in other divisions of the Housing Court, including Metro South Division in Canton, Northeast Division in Woburn, or the Eastern Division in Chelsea and Somerville.

GBLS is a hybrid workplace, allowing employees to work remotely several days per week.

Responsibilities: The attorney will maintain a substantial eviction trial caseload, and will participate in one or more regular housing clinics open to the general public. The attorney may also engage in the broader work of the Housing Unit, including supporting community organizing and tenants’ associations; advocating on behalf of tenants in public and subsidized housing; assisting tenant organizations in preserving affordable housing; EA Shelter advocacy; participating in legislative and administrative advocacy projects; engaging in impact litigation. If funding for this position changes, then the attorney may be assigned work in other areas of law within the Housing Unit or GBLS.

Qualifications: Applicants must be admitted to the Massachusetts Bar, or eligible for temporary admission under SJC Rule 3:04. Ability to travel outside Boston is required.

Prior housing and/or trial experience is preferred.
