    Lead Humanities Teacher

    Urban Achievers High School - Boston, Massachusetts

    Position Overview

    Urban Achievers, Massachusetts' only sports-industry based high school is seeking a dynamic, mission-driven Lead Humanities Teacher for 9th and 10th grades to help redefine what education looks like for high school student-athletes. Rooted in the belief that sport is a powerful vehicle for learning, leadership, and life, this role sits at the intersection of academics, athletics, and humanity.

    The Lead Humanities Teacher will not only deliver rigorous instruction in English Language Arts, History, and/or Social Studies, but will also lead the vision, design, and execution of an integrated humanities program that connects classroom learning to sport, identity, community, and real-world impact.

    This is an exempt, full-time position requiring a high level of ownership, creativity, and leadership.

    Core ResponsibilitiesInstruction & Curriculum Advancement

    • Step into and contribute to our Humanities program, bringing energy, expertise, and creativity to a curriculum driving meaningful, student-centered learning
    • Advance our sport-centered model of education, continuing to leverage sport as a powerful lens for developing leadership, critical thinking, social awareness, and athlete identity
    • Expand and elevate a growing body of project-based learning experiences, ensuring students engage in work that is academically rigorous, deeply relevant, and connected to real-world impact
    • Continuously strengthen and adapt instructional practices to meet the needs of diverse learners (particularly scholar-athletes) while upholding a culture of high expectations, growth, and excellence for all

    Program Leadership

    • Serve as the lead architect of the Humanities program, setting vision, scope, and sequence
    • Collaborate with school leadership to ensure alignment with Urban Achievers’ mission and model
    • Support and coach other teachers in interdisciplinary and culturally responsive practices
    • Contribute to strengthening a school culture rooted in excellence, accountability, and purpose
    • Embrace a culture of continuous feedback and reflection, inviting classroom observations to strengthen teaching methods while remaining open to innovative approaches

    Student Development

    • Act as an advisor and mentor to a cohort of scholar-athletes
    • Support students in developing critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills
    • Foster a classroom environment that promotes identity, voice, and belonging
    • Help students connect their passion for sport to college and career pathways
    • Help develop and streamline effective hybrid classroom experiences such that athletes may take part in classes without interruption when traveling

    Assessment & Data

    • Utilize data to inform instruction and support student growth
    • Provide timely, meaningful feedback to students and families
    • Implement various formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor student progress.
    • Drive individualized summer learning plans, ensuring each student’s academic needs are met and learning continues uninterrupted throughout the summer basketball season

    Family & Community Engagement

    • Build strong relationships with families as partners in student success
    • Engage community partners, particularly within the sports and civic ecosystem
    • Represent Urban Achievers in events, showcases, and public-facing opportunities

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred (Education, English, History, or related field)
    • Massachusetts teaching license (or ability to obtain)
    • Minimum of 3–5 years of teaching experience, preferably in urban or diverse school settings
    • Demonstrated ability to design engaging, culturally relevant curriculum
    • Strong belief in the power of sport as a developmental and educational tool
    • Experience with project-based learning and interdisciplinary instruction preferred
    • Proven leadership experience (grade-level lead, department chair, instructional coach, etc.) strongly preferred
