The Leros Cat Foundation
Role Description
Daily routine
- Hours of work: morning 8a.m to 11a.m, afternoon 17.00 to 19.00, and evening - only a voluntary basis - 00 to 23.00.
• Be ready to start at 8 am each morning.
- • Give breakfast to special needs or cage restrained cats
if any. The Leros Cat foundation does not act as a hospital for sick cats. It is a sanctuary for healthy cats who might subsequently fall ill.
- Garden cats have pate food twice a day: around 08.00 and around 17.00, this is a moment to connect with the cats and see if they have any injuries.
- Collect all empty food bowls for cleaning
- Garden cats’ poos need to be cleared of certain areas of the garden every other day.
- Clean every day the feeding stations of the garden cats. Food is replenished every day and water is changed every day 3 times: at 08.00, 17.00 and 22.00.
Garden cats living in the garden are not permitted inside the house - usually because of bad habits (such as pee-ing on the furniture). Give treatment if necessary – tablets, cleaning wounds, eye drops. Training will be given where required.
- House cats have also wet food but of better quality, this is for cats that cannot eat dry food due to stomatitis and Lucia who does not eat dry food due to an uncooperative temperament. So only for a maximum of up to 8 cats.
• House cats: water is changed every day 3 times: at 08.00, 17.00 and 22.00.
There are automated feeding stations in most rooms in the house, but these require topping-up.
House cats have an extra portion of dry food around 17.00, this is the only time we also give dry food in individual feeders, allowing to see how the cats are doing individually.
At 17.00 we collect the house cats that are allowed to stay in the garden during the day. House cats cannot stay in the garden at night due to the fatal car and motorbike accidents. We have had so far 20 casualties in 5 years.
House cats have pate food 3 times a day: at 08.00, 17.00 and 22.00
• Give treatment if necessary – tablets, cleaning wounds, eye drops.
• Collect all empty food bowls for cleaning.
• House cats have access to state-of-the-art litter trays that self-clean-after each use but do need cleaning once a day i.e. morning, in the afternoon, and evening we just take out the excess pee. Training will be provided where required. Clean the litter trays and replenish cat litter if required (it will be).
- Check the cats’ bedding and the soft furniture for pee, vomit and poo.
Soiled bedding should be taken to the laundry and put in the washing-machine to be laundered.
• Vacuum indoor areas. Mop daily.
• Report anything unusual – cats sick, not eating, urinating, diarrhea etc.
• Sweep the 2 verandas regularly, keep these areas clean and tidy.
• Retrieve cleaned laundry from the washing-machine and hang it to dry.
• Collect when dry from the line and store in the upstairs bedroom.
There will be sick cats that need cuddles, cats that need playing with or socialising.
Help might be needed with trips to the vet. There’s always gardening and watering to do; we need to keep weeds down as they harbour ticks and mosquitos.
We welcome visitors, so please be ready to engage with them and show them around.
If you are around in the day, please check outside water bowls. Our cats are on dried food and need plenty of water to digest it. Also, they drink a lot when it’s hot.
