Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) is a rapidly growing fully-remote non-profit organization focused on mobilizing lawyers and advocates in large-scale pro bono programs and issue advocacy campaigns to establish and enforce human rights and equality under the law. We were founded in November 2016 to respond to anticipated threats to human rights and the rule of law, and since then, have brought more than 125,000 lawyers and concerned community members together to fight for human rights and equal justice.

Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) coordinates large scale pro bono programs and issue advocacy efforts to ensure that all levels of government — national, state, and local — protect civil and human rights, and to provide equal justice under the law. We believe not only in the establishment and enforcement of equality under the law, but in the creation of social and economic conditions that lead to true equity. We currently run programs in the following areas: racial justice, voting rights, immigrants’ rights, climate change, and environmental justice.

ABOUT THE POSITION

STATUS: Full-Time

LOCATION: US. Remote; location flexible, ability to travel as needed. Some travel to immigration detention centers may be required.

JOB FUNCTIONS: The Staff Attorney, Project Corazón, will play a critical role in delivering high-quality immigration legal services while strengthening our pro bono model. This position blends direct representation of individuals detained in immigration detention centers, case supervision, volunteer attorney mentorship, systems-building, and strategic advocacy.

The ideal candidate is deeply committed to immigrants’ rights, detail-oriented, highly organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, technology-driven, remote environment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Legal Services & Case Management

• Provide direct representation and/or supervision in various immigration matters before EOIR, the BIA, and DHS.
• Prepare/Draft/Review/File applications, motions, evidence, and other immigration filings before EOIR, the BIA, and USCIS.
• Conduct legal screenings to assess eligibility for relief from removal.
• Review and supervise casework handled by pro bono attorneys and legal volunteers.
• Monitor deadlines and ensure compliance with law and related agency requirements.

Pro Bono Coordination & Training

• Support onboarding, mentorship, and supervision of pro bono attorneys working on detained and non-detained cases.
• Develop templates, detention-specific practice advisories, and workflow systems.
• Assist in designing and facilitating virtual/in-person clinics, webinars, and Know Your Rights sessions.

Strategy, Research & Advocacy

• Track and analyze detention-related policy changes and their impact on asylum seekers.
• Contribute to internal legal guidance, detention conditions tracking, and advocacy efforts.
• Support impact data collection related to detained cases and case outcomes.
• Contribute to policy memos, internal guidance documents, and advocacy materials.
• Collaborate with communications staff to contribute to blogs, public statements, and educational materials when needed.

Systems & Operations

• Maintain accurate case records in Clio and other case management systems.
• Contribute to program infrastructure, including intake processes, screening tools, and tracking systems.
• Identify operational improvements to enhance efficiency and quality control.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Commitment to L4GG’s mission.
• J.D. and active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Fluency in Spanish (written and spoken).
• 2+ of experience in removal defense and in handling humanitarian immigration cases, particularly U Visa, T Visa, and VAWA petitions.
• Strong legal writing and analytical skills.
• Ability to pass a background check and enter ICE detention centers.
• Exceptional comfort and competence with technology, including willingness to embrace new tools and self-train using provided resources as needed.
• Access to a quiet workspace with high-speed internet and the ability to take calls and/or video conferences during work hours.
• Ability to work autonomously as well as collaborate and work well with a team.
• Flexibility in adapting to the needs of a fast-paced national organization

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Demonstrated commitment to civil rights issues including, racial justice, disability rights, women’s rights, and/or LGBTQ+ rights.
• Experience supervising or mentoring junior attorneys or volunteers.
• Experience working with pro bono networks or nonprofit legal organizations.
• Experience working with detained or formerly detained clients.
• Familiarity with trauma-informed legal representation practices.
• Experience designing legal clinics or scalable service delivery models.
• Experience with the following digital tools: Airtable, Clio, Slack, and Apple computers.
