MATHCOUNTS, the nation’s premier non-profit dedicated to middle school mathematics, is seeking a Communications & Development Coordinator (C&DC) to help us deliver on our vital mission of inspiring excellence, confidence and curiosity in US students through fun and challenging math programs. After four decades of focusing exclusively on middle school, we are growing our team to serve grades 3-5 and 6-8.

The C&DC is a highly organized communications superstar who will carry out a variety of duties to support our fundraising, branding and alumni engagement. A background in STEM is not required, but a desire to improve attitudes about math for students is essential.

    Essential responsibilities include:

    Alumni Engagement

    • Support communications with program alumni, including creating a short monthly email newsletter and posting announcements on web and social media forums for alumni.
    • Coordinate 2 scholarship opportunities for alumni, including: processing applications, communicating with applicants and volunteer reviewers, assisting with online webinars, and sending awards.
    • Coordinate with alumni, program leaders, parents of participants and the outreach/recruitment team to encourage elementary program alumni to participate in middle school MATHCOUNTS programs.

    Fundraising & Communications

    • Support social media communications, including writing content, scheduling posts and searching for content across various channels/outlets.
    • Edit and help create various digital and printed resources for donors, alumni, media and the public.
    • Edit and help create visual and written materials for fundraising campaigns, including emails, mailed postcards, thank-you notes and social media posts.
    • Process online/mailed donations, completing documentation and tax-receipts/notes to donors accurately and quickly.
    • Coordinate list management (in Salesforce database and blast email platform) to ensure we have accurate information for alumni, donors and sponsor contacts.

    Candidate must possess:

    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate and work with a diverse group of program participants, donors, volunteers, vendors and staff.
    • Ability to learn quickly and incorporate feedback readily.
    • Ability to write high-quality messages quickly.
    • Excellent attention to detail and a keen eye for design, proofreading and editing.
    • Ability to work efficiently and independently on various projects simultaneously.
    • Eagerness to learn and high comfort level using technology such as Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign.
    • The desire to be part of a cohesive team that continuously strives for excellence.

    The ideal candidate will possess:

    • Experience with Microsoft Office, Salesforce, Pardot (or another automated email system), Canva or Adobe InDesign.
    • Experience with fundraising or social media (including ads and management platforms like Hootsuite or Buffer).
    • Experience as a classroom teacher.
    • Experience in fast-paced, non-profit office setting.

The C&DC will be a full-time hybrid position. The position requires in-office work 2 days per week, but specific hours will be flexible. Our office is located in Old Town, Alexandria, VA (just a 5-minute walk from the King Street metro station and close to multiple bus routes, including the Old Town Circulator and Metroway).
