    Job Description

    Summary/objective

    The Housing & Shelter Capacity Building Coordinator will provide Capacity Building Services (CBS), virtual and in person training, and technical assistance for the Overdose Prevention and Harm Reduction Education in Shelters and Housing (O-PHRESH), an initiative in partnership with San Francisco’s Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH). The Housing & Shelter Capacity Building Coordinator will assist with start-up planning activities and project development of the Harm Reduction in Housing training series and will develop training curriculum and materials that stay responsive to the needs of frontline housing and shelter service providers, community-based organizations, and the community they serve in San Francisco.

    In addition, the Housing and Shelter Capacity Building Coordinator will work alongside the Capacity Building & Training Manager to support the National Harm Reduction Coalition’s San Francisco programs which include the Drug Overdose Prevention & Education Project (DOPE), and the Harm Reduction Training Institute (HRTI) to provide online training and technical assistance to programs.

    The ideal candidate is an individual who deeply enjoys learning, teaching, facilitating group

    discussions, and providing political education about harm reduction, stigma, overdose prevention, and caring for people who use drugs. NHRC prioritizes hiring people with lived experience with drug use, sex work, and/or incarceration, and/or are from the communities we serve.

    Essential functions

    • Assist with all OPHRESH start-up planning activities and project development–including planning, scheduling, and publicizing Harm Reduction in Housing training series and technical assistance for HSH providers.
    • Develop training curriculum and materials that stay responsive to the needs of frontline housing and shelter service providers, community-based organizations, and the community they serve in San Francisco.
    • Conduct and facilitate virtual and in person Harm Reduction in Housing training series for HSH providers, and create space for participants to process and articulate challenges to overdose prevention and response, along with focused discussions on the specific training curricula and practices.
    • Provide HSH-funded supportive housing and shelter service providers with technical assistance in the development and implementation of harm reduction policies and overdose prevention and response protocols.
    • In collaboration with the Capacity Building & Training Development Manager, create and disseminate evaluation forms, as well as set up certificates of completion for all O-PHRESH calendar workshops.
    • Track workshops and technical assistance delivered weekly upon completion.
    • Review workshop evaluations on an ongoing basis for continuous performance and content improvement.
    • Develop and foster partnerships with HSH funded agencies and community-based organizations.
    • Assist in the facilitation of in person training for the DOPE Project.
    • Support virtual training facilitation for the Harm Reduction Training Institute (HRTI)
    • Attend NHRC-wide staff and CBS department meetings.

    • Content Development: Experience developing and managing health education materials virtually and in person with a public health and harm reduction lens, including culturally responsive and evidence-based resources tailored to diverse populations

    Physical demands - Sedentary work. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer monitor/screen; extensive reading. Sitting, Walking, Standing, Computer Use/Driving, Lifting (25lbs).

    Travel required - Frequent local travel

    Required education and experience

    • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in capacity-building, group facilitation, training, curricula development and implementation, and/or technical assistance.
    • Knowledge and experience in supportive housing and shelter settings, prevention-oriented public health, harm reduction philosophy and application, drug user health, and issues faced by communities most impacted by the racialized war on drugs, homelessness, and overdose, ideally in San Francisco.
    • Ability to manage professional and timely e-mail, phone, and in-person communication with co-workers, supervisors, service providers, and funders.
    • Excellent oral, writing, and editing communications skills.
    • Ability to prioritize, work independently and in teams, and manage multiple responsibilities.
    • Proficiency with Zoom, Gmail Workspace and Microsoft Teams

    Preferred education and experience

    • In-depth knowledge of harm reduction framework and application in housing and shelter settings
    • Spanish/English bilingual fluency (oral and written) preferred
