    January 14, 11 AM–12:30 PM or 4 PM–5:30 PM (1.5 hour virtual training)

    January 19, 2026 Shift A: 7:30 am - 3:30 pm or Shift B: 7:30 am - 2:00 pm

    Number of paid hours and compensation:

    $25/hr.

    About the Role

    L.A. Works is recruiting Check-in Captains to help lead and support the Volunteer Check-In team who will set the tone for the MLK 2026 Volunteer Festival—the largest MLK Day of Service event in Los Angeles. As a Check-in Captain, you’ll ensure a warm, welcoming, organized, and efficient start to each guest’s experience at the festival.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Serve as a lead for Hospitality and Check-in Volunteers who are welcoming and checking in participants.
    • Maintain smooth traffic flow and ensure an organized check-in area.
    • Captains will ensure that Hospitality and Check-in Volunteers are able to:
    • Check in attendees via an online or app-based registration system;
    • Provide general event information, directions, and instructions to guests;
    • Answer participant questions about activities, schedules, and locations; and
    • Welcome event participants upon arrival with enthusiasm and professionalism.
    • Be prepared to step in as needed.
    • Assist with setup and breakdown of check-in tables, signage, and materials as needed.

    Skills & Qualifications:

    • Must be 18 years or older
    • Customer service / Hospitality experience recommended
    • Comfortable using a mobile check-in app
    • Able to kindly lead others and troubleshoot issues as needed
    • Friendly and approachable demeanor; enjoys interacting with people
    • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
    • Punctual, reliable, and able to work well in a fast-paced environment
    • Enthusiasm for community service and Dr. King’s message of unity and equity

    Training Requirements

    All Check-in Captains must attend one mandatory virtual Check-In Captain training and one Volunteer Event Crew virtual training so that you have a good understanding of the event and know how to manage your Hospitality and Check-in Volunteers team. You will be paid for your time attending both trainings.

    Event Shift Details: January 19th, 2026

    Shift A: 7:30 am - 3:30 pm - Focus on welcoming early participants and assisting with check-in operations during the morning rush, managing the Hospitality and Check-in Volunteers, and breakdown post-event of tables, tents, signage and equipment

    Shift B: 7:30am - 2:00 pm - Focus on welcoming early participants and assisting with check-in operations, managing the Hospitality and Check-in Volunteers, during the morning rush.

    Classification and salary: The Check-In Crew Captain is a Temporary employee position of L.A. Works, employed at will, and reports directly to the Director of AmeriCorps - State and National, VISTA, Alisha CathirellTanzer. As such, the Check-In Crew Captain is subject to the policies and procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook. The targeted hiring salary is $25/hour.
