    Description

We're looking for an experienced Spanish-language writer, adapter, and editor — not simply a translator — who can bring cultural and linguistic fluency to our communications. This consultant will produce Spanish-language versions of Free Press resources and press materials that are accurate, accessible, and consistent with our voice and values. The work requires someone who understands how to write for U.S. Spanish-speaking audiences in general, accessible language.

The consultant will report directly to our Senior Producer and Strategist and will work collaboratively with the marketing and communications team.

    Term of Contract

This is an ongoing contract position. The start date is negotiable, with work assigned on a rolling basis. Estimated 20 hours a month of work.

    Scope of Work

    Long-Form Adaptation Workflow

    • Adapt Free Press and Free Press Action print resources, reports, issue briefs and policy guides from English into Spanish written for U.S. Spanish-speaking audiences
    • Go beyond word-for-word rendering to produce materials that read as originally written for Spanish speakers
    • Work closely with the Free Press Senior Producer and Strategist to review, revise and finalize each piece before publication

    Press Release Workflow

    • Produce Spanish-language versions of Free Press and Free Press Action press releases on an as-needed basis
    • Work on these pre-determined activations at a fast pace to meet the requirements of a quickly moving newscycle

    Spanish-Language Style and Consistency

    • Curate and maintain a Free Press Spanish-language glossary, including the organization's most frequently used terms, phrases and proper names
    • Ensure consistency across all Spanish-language materials by applying and updating this living reference document
    • Flag usage decisions or terminology questions for editor review
    • Copy edit all Spanish language content

    Desired Experience & Skills

    • Be a writer and editor first — someone who writes in Spanish naturally and accessibly
    • Has demonstrated experience writing for U.S. Spanish-speaking audiences
    • Shows a strong command of journalistic and policy writing in both languages
    • Proven ability to match tone, voice and level of formality to the intended audience and format
    • Has experience working with editorial style guides; ability to contribute to and maintain one
    • Is self-directed, organized, and able to manage two distinct workflows with different timelines
    • Has passion for free speech, racial justice and media access
    • Demonstrates commitment to Free Press’ mission of fighting for everyone's rights to connect and communicate

    Performance Standards

    • Delivers Spanish-language materials that require minimal back-and-forth — accurate, polished and audience-ready
    • Applies and updates the Free Press Spanish-language glossary consistently across all work
    • Available at least one hour per week for check-ins or editorial review with the Free Press editor
    • Manages their own time to meet agreed-upon deadlines for both workflows
    • Communicates proactively if timelines or scope need adjustment

    Level of Language Proficiency

Expert or native fluency in written Spanish.
