    Description

    Position Overview

    The President & Chief Executive Officer is the senior executive leader responsible for the strategic direction, organizational health, and national impact of 4A Arts (American Alliance of Artists & Audiences), a nonprofit organization dedicated to mobilizing Americans to advocate for increased public investment in arts, culture, design, and craft across the United States.

    Working in close partnership with the Board of Directors, the President & CEO advances the organization’s mission, expands its national influence, ensures financial sustainability, and oversees the effective implementation of all programs and initiatives. The President & CEO is also responsible for cultivating strategic partnerships across the arts advocacy ecosystem and positioning 4A Arts as a leading national voice in grassroots cultural advocacy.

    The President & CEO works collaboratively with Board leadership, staff, advocacy partners, funders, and external stakeholders to ensure that the organization’s communications, organizing, and fundraising strategies are aligned in support of long-term institutional growth and public impact.

    Core Responsibilities

    Organizational Leadership & Strategy

    • Lead the organization’s strategic planning and national growth.
    • Ensure programs, partnerships, and initiatives align with the mission and values of 4A Arts.
    • Expand the Organizing for the Arts (O4A) initiative and partnerships with State Arts Advocacy Organizations (SAAOs).
    • Foster a collaborative, high-performing organizational culture.
    • Establish organizational priorities, operational goals, and performance benchmarks.
    • Develop new programs and strategic opportunities consistent with the organization’s mission.

    Board Governance & Institutional Leadership

    • Serve as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and staff.
    • Support Board governance, strategic planning, and committee activities.
    • Facilitate Board engagement in fundraising, advocacy, and institutional development.
    • Provide the Board with timely, transparent, and analytically sound reporting on organizational performance, finances, and program outcomes.

    Fundraising & Financial Stewardship

    • Lead fundraising and development strategy in partnership with the Board and consultants.
    • Cultivate relationships with donors, foundations, sponsors, and institutional funders.
    • Expand contributed revenue, membership support, and earned-income opportunities.
    • Oversee financial planning, budgeting, compliance, and organizational accountability.
    • Work with accountants, auditors, and legal counsel to ensure fiscal transparency and regulatory compliance.

    National Partnerships & Advocacy Leadership

    • Position 4A Arts as a national leader in grassroots arts advocacy.
    • Build relationships with arts organizations, advocacy coalitions, cultural institutions, funders, and policymakers.
    • Represent the organization at national conferences, convenings, and policy forums.
    • Strengthen partnerships with advocacy networks, including the Creative States Coalition and allied organizations.

    Program Oversight & Public Engagement

    • Provide executive oversight of all programs, including Organizing for the Arts (O4A).
    • Ensure programs effectively mobilize citizen advocates and strengthen public engagement.
    • Monitor program impact and ensure organizational data is accurate and credible.
    • Collaborate with staff and partners to evaluate and scale successful initiatives.
    • Serve as the primary public spokesperson for the organization.
    • Advocate for the social, civic, educational, and economic value of arts and culture.
    • Strengthen the organization’s national visibility and reputation.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Ten or more years of senior leadership experience within nonprofit, cultural, advocacy, membership, philanthropic, or public-sector organizations.
    • Demonstrated success in fundraising, institutional development, and strategic partnership building.
    • Strong understanding of nonprofit governance, financial management, and organizational leadership.
    • Experience working effectively with Boards of Directors and diverse stakeholder communities.
    • Exceptional written, verbal, and public communication skills.
    • Demonstrated commitment to arts and cultural advocacy, civic engagement, and public service.
    • Experience managing distributed teams, coalition-based initiatives, or national advocacy programs preferred.

    FULL TIME | EXEMPT | FULLY REMOTE

    SALARY: $120,000 – $135,000
