    Unitarian Universalist Church at Washington Crossing

    The Unitarian Universalist Church at Washington Crossing is a vibrant, multi-platform Unitarian Universalist congregation of approximately 300 adults and 30 children. Serving both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, we pride ourselves on being theologically diverse, deeply relational and values driven.

    Community Connector

    We seek a three quarter time Community Connector to help fulfill the create community portion of our three-part mission statement: to create community, celebrate life, and change the world.

    Working collaboratively with staff, lay leaders, and volunteers, this position develops and coordinates programs, events, and systems that help members, friends, and visitors of all ages build meaningful connections, supported in Unitarian Universalist values.

With a specific lens toward the unique challenges facing our children and families, we are looking for candidates who can build on what continues to serve us well, adapt or let go of what is no longer working, and implement innovations and changes that will allow us to thrive into the future. This is a 12-month position at 30 hours per week with the opportunity to grow the position if the need arises.

    Essential Responsibilities

    Community Building & Engagement

    • Design, implement and promote programs and/or social events that foster meaningful relationships among members and friends throughout the year.
    • Develop activities with a specific lens toward parents and caregivers and the unique challenges facing families today.
    • Partner with staff and lay leaders to weave social connection opportunities into worship, learning, service, and justice activities.

    Welcome & Inclusion

    • Support Congregational Engagement Ministry Team, Hosts and staff in developing and overseeing systems for welcoming visitors, and nurturing newcomers into engaged community members.
    • Identify and systematically address physical, social, or cultural barriers to participation and belonging in pursuit of full inclusion and accessibility.

    Volunteer Coordination

    • Recruit, train, support, and recognize volunteers who assist with:
      • Welcoming and hospitality
      • Community events
      • Small-group ministries
      • Intergenerational programming.

    Communications & Outreach

    • Assist in fulfilling communication and outreach goals by creating and supporting content for social media, email communications, and other engagement platforms.

    Pastoral Connection

    • Recognize pastoral care needs and connect individuals with appropriate staff, lay pastoral caregivers, or community resources.

    Qualifications

    • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with a genuine interest in engaging people of all ages and backgrounds.
    • Has a creative approach and tenacity to community building—consistently brainstorming, testing, and refining the ways we bring people together.
    • Demonstrated ability to create welcoming, inclusive environments that foster belonging and community participation.
    • Experience coordinating programs, events, volunteers, or community engagement initiatives.
    • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Comfort creating content for social media, email communications, and other outreach platforms.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, lay leaders, and community partners.
    • Exercises independent judgment in planning and implementing community engagement initiatives within approved budgets and policies.
    • Ability to identify barriers to participation and develop strategies that promote inclusion and accessibility.
    • Proficiency with common office software, databases, and communication tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Zoom, social media platforms).
    • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends, including required Sunday attendance.
    • Commitment to the values of Unitarian Universalism, including creating accessible, anti-oppressive, and multicultural community environments.

    Success Measures

    Success in this role will be demonstrated through:

    • Increased member retention and engagement across all age groups.
    • Growth in participation in small groups, social opportunities, and community programs.
    • Effective tracking and reporting of attendance, participation trends, and engagement metrics.
    • Demonstrated progress toward creating a more welcoming, inclusive, and connected congregation.

    Salary

    Manager Level: $45,500–$48,800 annually

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Supervises volunteers only.

    Work Setting

    Hybrid

    To successfully build meaningful relationships with staff and congregation members, this role is primarily in-person. The schedule minimally requires:

    • On-site attendance three Sundays per month
    • One work day in the office per week
    • Remote flexibility for remaining scheduled hours
