    Description

    Role: Executive Assistant

Classification: Part-Time (15-20 hours), with expansion potential depending on fit and funding

Context: Rev. Mariama White-Hammond is the Senior Pastor of New Roots AME Church (www.newroots.church), a multi-racial, multi-class, affirming congregation rooted in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. Rev Mariama (www.revmariama.net) is also an interfaith leader, community organizer and speaker who is very active locally and nationally around issues of social and ecological justice. She is seeking a person with the administrative skills to support her ministry work both to her immediate congregation and to the wider community. An ideal candidate would have a faith that draws them to the work of justice in the world.

Location: Strong preference for someone in the Boston area. The goal is to work together in person up to two days a week but all candidates must have capacity for remote work on other days of the week or when Rev. Mariama is traveling. This role was previously filled by a remote person, so for a candidate with the right skills and experience, completely remote will be considered. However, role expansion is less likely 15-20 hours if completely remote.

    Reports To: Pastor Mariama White-Hammond

Objective: To provide logistical, technical, and communications support to the Senior Pastor. This role supports the thriving of the Senior Pastor and wider church by streamlining systems, managing communications, and supporting digital platforms. This support includes attention to the Senior Pastor's broader life of public ministry, including interacting with her speaking engagements, activist commitments, and leadership presence beyond the church.

    Compensation: $30-$35/hr depending on experience

Hiring Timeline: We are keen to get the right person and will leave the posting open until we find the right candidate. Screening interviews will begin after Easter in hopes of having someone start by June 1st. Strong candidates that can’t start on June 1st are still encouraged to apply.

Disposition and Experience: Pastor Mariama has a demanding schedule with no “typical day.” In this season, she has limited capacity to train someone and is seeking a candidate with prior experience as an executive or administrative assistant. She is looking for a detail-oriented person who is can deal graciously with many different kinds of people. They will have to understand what Rev. Mariama is called to do in the world and help her schedule to align with that calling. This person will help Rev. Mariama to prioritize and have to say no to things that don’t align. Recently this job was done in 15-20 hours spaced out over 3-5 days depending on the intensity of the season and the needs of the EA. Less than 3 part-time days spaced out would make it hard to track correspondence in a timely manner.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Calendar Management and Scheduling

    • Maintain and update Rev. Mariama’s professional calendar
    • Schedule meetings, confirm logistics, send reminders
    • Coordinate recurring events, pulpit supply schedules, and follow-ups

    3. Digital Tools and Systems Management

    • Support Rev. Mariama with digital organization (Google Suite, Zoom, shared drives)
    • Co-manage w/ Rev. Mariama internal systems like Subsplash, Canva, Dropbox, etc
    • Website management or design highly desired but not required

    4. Weekly & Monthly Rhythms of Preparation

    • Work with Rev. Mariama to prepare for meetings, track time use and recurring responsibilities, and anticipate needs
    • Create or adapt weekly workflows/checklists for recurring tasks (bulletins, speaking events, grant cycles, etc.)
    • Ensure integration between digital calendars, to-do lists, and actual time available
    • Help track and coordinate timelines for internal church initiatives and external ministry engagements

    5. Event and Program Logistics

    • Provide behind-the-scenes support for events, Sunday services, and external appearances
    • Track deadlines and details for recurring church-wide events
    • Support planning needs tied to public ministry (e.g., press kits, bios, media logistics)
    • Join then lead meetings with speaking engagements clients to prep for speeches

    Benefits

If the person is local they will be an employee and covered by Worker's Comp but below the minimum hours for health insurance coverage. However if the position grows they can be eligible from health and dental. That is unlikely to happen in the first 6 months. But is a possibility in 2027 depending on funding and church growth.

If the candidate is working from another state or they will have to be a contractor because we are not incorporated in any state other than Massachusetts. There is also less likelihood for role growth if the person is completely virtual.
