As an official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service and California State Parks, we support habitat restoration, conservation, environmental education, scientific research, youth workforce development, and public access to parklands.

Our organization employs approximately 110 people across a variety of programs, including field crews, native plant nurseries, education programs, youth employment initiatives, and administrative operations.

    Position Overview

SAMO Fund is seeking an experienced, part-time Human Resources Consultant to provide ongoing HR guidance and support to our leadership team. We are looking for someone who can help us strengthen our internal HR practices, maintain compliance with California employment laws, and develop practical systems that support our employees and managers.

The ideal candidate understands the challenges of a growing nonprofit organization and can provide both strategic guidance and hands-on assistance with day to day HR matters.

    Key Responsibilities:

    HR Compliance and Risk Management

      • Review and update employee policies, procedures, and handbook.
      • Ensure compliance with California employment and wage and hour laws.
      • Advise on employee classification, compensation practices, leave requirements, and workplace policies.
      • Assist with HR audits, documentation, and regulatory compliance.
      • Support compliance with workplace safety and employment requirements.

    Employee Relations and Management Support

      • Provide confidential guidance to leadership on employee relations and personnel matters.
      • Assist with employee performance management, corrective actions, and disciplinary procedures.
      • Support workplace investigations and conflict resolution when needed.
      • Advise on employee separations and other sensitive personnel decisions.
      • Help supervisors develop consistent and effective management practices.

    HR Systems and Organizational Development

      • Evaluate and improve existing HR processes and systems.
      • Strengthen onboarding, employee documentation, and personnel recordkeeping.
      • Develop practical HR procedures and management tools.
      • Assist with job descriptions, compensation structures, and performance evaluations.
      • Support organizational planning as staffing and programs evolve.

    Recruitment and Workforce Support

      • Provide guidance on hiring practices, recruitment, and employee retention.
      • Support compliance related to youth employment, internships, seasonal employees, and grant funded positions.
      • Advise on employee training and professional development needs.

    Qualifications

      • Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible HR experience, including senior level HR management or consulting.
      • Strong working knowledge of California employment laws and HR compliance requirements.
      • Experience supporting organizations with 75 to 150 employees.
      • Demonstrated experience with employee relations, workplace investigations, and performance management.
      • Experience developing HR policies, handbooks, and organizational systems.
      • Excellent communication, judgment, and problem solving skills.
      • Ability to work independently and provide practical, responsive guidance.
      • Experience working with nonprofit organizations strongly preferred.
      • SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or comparable certification preferred.

    Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is approachable, responsive, and comfortable working directly with an Executive Director and management team. This person should be able to identify potential HR risks, recommend solutions, and help implement improvements without creating unnecessary administrative burdens.

We value someone who understands that effective HR is not just about compliance. It is also about helping employees succeed and giving managers the tools they need to lead effectively.
