    Description

    The Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS), an educational institute and think tank devoted to the study of international migration, seeks to hire a research and policy analyst.

    The person in this role will work closely with CMS’s Executive Director, Sr. Research & Policy Analyst, and other team members to carry out the organizational research agenda. The position will report to the Sr. Research & Policy Analyst. Tasks performed by this role include quantitative and qualitative data cleaning and analysis, data visualization for reports and briefs, drafting and editing research products, conducting expert interviews, representing CMS in relevant stakeholder and working group meetings, and administrative responsibilities. The Research & Policy Analyst’s responsibilities will include:

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Research Responsibilities

    • Query American Community Survey (ACS) data in order to profile and make estimates of vulnerable US foreign-born populations;
    • Analyze potential impacts of new or existing legislation, regulations, or policies;
    • Collect quantitative and qualitative data in support of CMS research initiatives through surveys, external partnerships, interviews, and focus groups;
    • Support CMS research projects including literature reviews, field work, and drafting/editing reports, briefs, and posts;
    • Develop and design data-based assets and products, such as fact-sheets, graphs, infographics, and one-pagers on particular populations;
    • Coordinate with CMS research team members to respond to external data requests;
    • Disseminate and promote CMS’s data and policy analysis, research findings, and recommendations through presentations, webinars, policy briefings, academic conferences, and other vehicles;

    Policy, Development, Engagement Responsibilities

    • Participate in meetings with advisory groups, community partners, and coalitions;
    • Participate in gatherings of scholars, researchers, Catholic institutions, and other community-based groups on identifying issues that are ripe for research;
    • Assist in resource development by supporting research project development, contributing to funding proposals, and writing narrative donor reports.
    • Participate in organizational outreach and media activities;

    Internal Responsibilities

    • Participate fully in the life of the agency, particularly on cross-cutting needs;
    • Participate in (monthly/or as scheduled) staff meetings, annual planning meetings, and ad hoc programmatic meetings;
    • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the ED.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

    • A Master’s degree in a relevant social science field;
    • At least 2-3 years of relevant professional research experience;
    • High intermediate to advanced proficiency in Stata and proficiency with Microsoft Excel;
    • Close attention to detail;
    • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and follow through on issues in a timely manner;
    • Interested in advancing CMS’s mission;
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including ability to summarize and synthesize complex information accurately and concisely;
    • Experience presenting research results to diverse audiences, including academics, policymakers, and the general public;

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Proficiency in languages other than English (Spanish or French preferred);
    • Familiarity with US policies and immigrant groups;
    • Experience working with data from Census Bureau surveys such as the American Community Survey and an understanding of survey sampling and weighting;
    • Experience with analysis and/or making simple maps on R, Tableau, ArcGIS, or another statistical software.

    This position is part-time (24 hours/week), with the possibility of extending to full-time pending funding. The annual salary range is between $70,000 and 75,000, prorated to a part-time range of $42,000 to $45,000 (commensurate with experience). The position is based in New York City. CMS staff follow a hybrid work arrangement.
