Job Title: Communications and Membership Associate
Reports to: Executive Director
Location: Washington, D.C. with Hybrid arrangement- Remote and In-Office. Ability to commute into our Washington D.C. HQ office at least twice a week strongly preferred. Up to 20% travel expected.
Pay Type: Salary, Exempt
Expected Pay Range: $57,000 - 70,000
POSITION OVERVIEW
Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is a membership nonprofit advancing diversity in newsrooms, and ensuring fair and accurate coverage of communities of color.
AAJA seeks a Communications and Membership Associate to lead the amplification of AAJA’s mission, including its events, programs, and opportunities. As a key member of a small AAJA team, this position will collaborate with other Directors and other members of the team as appropriate to best meet AAJA's mission.
The Candidate
We seek a mission-oriented, self-starting, collaborative individual who is highly organized and excited for opportunities to create, innovate, and contribute to building processes. Must have an all-hands-on-deck and can-do attitude. Can anticipate needs, pivot quickly, juggle multiple competing priorities, and think strategically. Strong writing skills are a must. Familiarity with data and CRMs is preferred.
Candidate should possess a deep commitment to the advancement of diversity and inclusion in newsrooms, and an overall commitment to AAPI communities in diversity, equity, and inclusion dialogues overall.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in media or familiarity with the journalism industry
- Background or experience in marketing/communications, education in Asian American and/or Pacific Islander studies is preferred
- Experience with WordPress and/or Squarespace, Google Workspace, Zoom/webinars, and social media platforms
- Experience with project management tools (e.g., Asana)
- Understanding of marketing and communications functions (brand, digital, CRM/email marketing)
- A keen eye for graphic design and brand cohesion
- Proficiency with video and graphic editing software is a plus
Key Responsibilities
- Lead digital communications and membership campaigns to support member recruitment, retention, and participation in key programs and events, including signature programs, convention, awards, and scholarships.
- Collaborate with both internal and external teams and stakeholders to successfully promote AAJA’s programs, initiatives and events.
- Develop, execute, and manage team members to execute multi-channel marketing and communication strategies, managing content, emails and newsletters, social media content, campaign calendars, and other promotional activities across digital platforms.
- Manage creation of biweekly newsletters that reach 10,000+.
- Lead weekly meetings with the team.
- Maintain and update website content (WordPress/Squarespace)
- Ensure consistency in brand voice and messaging across all platforms
- Track and report on communications performance (email, social, web)
- Respond to external communications and partnership inquiries
- Administer the organization's awards and scholarship cycles from planning through completion, including project management, application administration, and annual updates.
- Coordinate volunteer judges and selection committees, manage recipient communications and payment processing, and oversee recognition activities on digital platforms and at convention.
